Parker 51 Needs Nib Tune?

Hi. So I got this 51 vac in the wild. Immediately filled it and started to write. the only way I could get consistent ink to page was to apply a lot of pressure, way too much pressure. So, I took it apart, cleaned up like new, ultrasonic on nib feed and breather tube. Air flows freely thru tube and breather hole. The nib slit looks right at the vent hole. then appears to decrease to zero just before the iridium tip. Put back together...still wont write well without a lot of pressure. Time to try to open up the nib slit?

By the way, I have another 51 with exactly the same issue.post-118622-0-71958200-1481119462_thumb.jpg

Sorry about upside down Apple image.

Most likely a feed-nib-hood spacing issue.

I agree with Farmboy. Write with the hood off to see if the symptom disappears, before making any other change. Don't disturb the tine spacing until you can eliminate other factors.

ok, with hood off writes much better, still a little dry but much better. Hood back on, problem returns. So I think I have two pens with this problem. Solution? Fine sandpaper to increase the bore?

Is the problem that these plastics shrink slightly over time?

Thanks for the great help.

Hi Don, have a read of this thread. Basically, warm the hood , open up the cleareace a little. And don't wave the hood to dry it like poor gasman! https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/topic/306136-51-writes-perfectly-with-hood-off;-barely-at-all-with-it-on/

Suspect feed is to tight on the top (slit side) of the nib.

Thankfully, it's hard to go wrong heat setting a 51 feed, if there are any other issues. A couple of photos of the nib and the feed would be handy!

edit - I mean photographed separated.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
