Robert Oster Signature Inks Ng Special

First thanks a lot to Migo for sharing some ROSi samples with me!

Someone else will have to explain the name. Seems to be a colour commissioned by someone called "Ng" (seems to be a Cantonese name).

This is my first experience with Robert Oster inks. Gosh I'm so very disappointed. The colour is quite pretty; I like yellows and oranges. But this ink is DRY. Bone. Desert. Tumbler. No lubrication. I feel like I'm writing with a blade.

(At the end I had enough of the dryness. So I turned the converter knob and primed the nib saturated in ink. That's a better colour.)

I think we Sailor ink-lovers are so spoilt by the consistency of their products: I'd estimate that < 95% of the Sailor inks I have are ultra smooth, saturated & generously lubricating. So other brands have a lot to live up to.

Robert Oster inks are more typical of those other brands; they vary widely between thin & dry, and saturated & wet. His inks are a smorgasbord of wet & dry :-) I'd definitely agree that Ng Special '16 is one of his driest & maybe it was made that way for the guy who commissioned it?

I think there are conflicting accounts because some of the initial reviews & earlier posts were made using extremely wet pens with very broad nibs. These always seemed to me to flatter the inks rather.

Saying that, I do like many Oster inks, for their originality & quirkiness and some of his inks are up there with my favourites.

Thanks for the review. Not a color for me, though -- wet OR dry.

Although I did like your choice of material for your writing sample. (But ACK! I remember when that song first got airplay on the radio.... :o Am I really that old? Yup, went and Googled it -- 1967....)

Not to sound defensive or offensive but that is a quote direct from Robert Oster's website.

And I should have included an emphasis on also.

Or at least that is what the quote says.

Hi there, Fire and Ice is indeed a different colour (a gorgeous blue with red sheen) and I pointed out to Robert Oster that there was an error on his website regarding the write up for the NG SPECIAL ink.....I'm the guy for whom Robert created the Ng ink :-)

Nice. :)

Any particular reason why you asked (if you did) Mr. Robert to make such a dry ink?

I had no idea it would come out as dry as it did...it was a tweaking of another ink of his and Robert loved the colour he created that he asked if he could use my name to sell the new colour. I said yes naturally :)

I only have one RO ink (Bondi Blue) and I like it, fairly wet and well behaved. I would hate one that dry!

I used it in a Cross and an OMAS pen with Medium nibs and it wasn't an issue. I also used it in a flex pen which is gorgeous. I wouldn't call it bone dry but a medium-dry type of ink. You have to find the right type of pen for it.

Looks like a lovely ink.

I actually prefer inks on the drier end of the spectrum because I use very bad paper at times and a very wet ink makes that paper unusable.

I know, I know, buy better paper but that factors is out of my control sometimes.

How does this compare wetness/dryness to that known ink standard of Waterman wet to Pelikan 4001 dry?

If the Robert Osters vary in wetness/dryness, would be useful to compare it to other inks when describing that.

Eta. Lovely orange.

It is comparable to the dryness of a Pelikan 4001 Blue-Black (perhaps even a tad drier). If you are familiar with Montblanc Golden Yellow it is close to that. Put it in a juicy wet nib and it will be good to go :)

Stunning colour, thank you for the review, really enjoyed the doodle too. I absolutely love reds and oranges and this one looks amazing in the wide nibs. Anyone tried a side by side with Apache Sunset?

I actually did a mini review for a Fountain pen forum on Facebook late last year when the Ng ink was released - Apache Sunset goes to a flaming red colour on some papers when it pools thickly (it doesn't dry on Tomoe River Paper however!) whereas the Ng ink goes to a burnished orange. I've posted my review on this ink on the forum with comparisons between Apache Sunset.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
