Anyone that does not have a few Chinese Pens in their collection is really missing some great deals on some quality pens. Good to see they are getting some coverage.

Thanks to everyone who helped make this two-piece article such a joy to research and write. I appreciate all of the experts who helped me learn more about this specific area of contemporary fountain pens. Thanks for the post, Bob!

It is, and they definitely deserve to be more widely known in the west.

Richard

They're getting widely known in my small part of the West. Lol.

I started out with 3 from Pen Chalet; two X-450's and one X-750 by Jinhao... they were having a Black Friday sale. I was so impressed with those three pens, I bought the following from various retailers:

4 more X-450's

1 more X-750

2 X-250's

2 Kaigelu 316's

1 Kaigelu 356

1 Baoer 388

1 Hero 7032 and

1 Hero 329

I hope I got all those model numbers right. :)

I figured this would give me a nice sampling of Chinese pens... what say you guys? Did I miss any glaringly good ones?

Anthony,

The only two I feel missed off that list that could qualify easily are the Jinhao 159 (it's HUGE) and the Jinhao 5000. I grew up using Parker pens, and the MB shape of the J159 is not really to my taste. The J5000, though, is. I reviewed it here: https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/topic/214811-jinhao-5000-filigree-overlay-pen-review/

Hello Richard,

Thank you for taking the time to respond to my earlier post. :)

I do agree with you down the line; I considered the J159, but when I studied the pictures, decided to let it go. I feared it would be too fat for my tastes. The J450 & 750 are "just right," (while I find the grip section too narrow on the J250's, for my tastes).

I'm putting the 5000 on my short list; it looks more like a work of art than a pen and with its thin gold "plating" that you discuss, I may use it as such, i.e., more of a desk decoration than a working pen.

For the prices, I may even pick up a J159 for the hell of it; just to try it out... if it's too big for me, I can always give it away. :)

Thanks again,

Anthony

You did. Try a Picasso 915. It's a bit pricy (about $30 w/o box, incl. shipping), but well worth the extra buck. A looker, a writer, a keeper.

I have both pens too.! The Hua Hong is very ergonomic and light pen, I am sorry I do not use it as often as my Kaigelu. Well perhaps that can change ...

Hello Eliweisz,

Thanks, I'll put that one on my short list, too. :)

JUST TO MAKE SURE: It is the 915 and not the 916? (They seem to offer both and I want to make sure I'm getting the "good one"). :)

915, definitely.

916 may be good, but it's very different. Here's an FPN review:

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
