Is This A Real Montblanc?

Hi, I've recently started collecting pens, particularly Montblancs. So far, I've only bought from authorized dealers, but I've started scanning eBay and other auction sites. I came across this pen, at a very low price, which claims to be an old Montblanc Greta Garbo. I can't find anything about it on the internet, so I have to assume it's a fake. Can anyone confirm?

It's a fake. Google Image search is your friend. It can help identify what a genuine model looks like.

Greta Garbage.

You did the right thing.

You'll (obviously) be alright buying from AD's - but there are also genuine pens available on ebay.

If in doubt, post up in this forum first, lots of help always avaiable.

Good luck.

Thanks. Is it safe to assume that if the pens are sold with boxes and stamped guarantee booklets they're authentic? Or have the booklets been counterfeited too? (I know the boxes are easy to come by; it's interesting that a lot of people sell the empty boxes on eBay, presumably to be bought by scammers to put their bogus pens in.)

Yes booklets have been fakes as has all of the packaging. But it's not just Montblanc pens. There are fake ST Dupont pens and lighters, Parker Sonnets, even fake Hero fountain pens.

Today a buyer needs to know the product and also the seller. Buy the seller as much as the product. Look closely not just at summary ratings but also the details; does the ratings history show lots of $1.00 transactions and then a slew of high buck items show up for sale? If so, run. Is the rating history all new? If so run. Does it look like a real deal but seem reasonable because it is from an "Estate Sale"? If so run.

Wow, this is all more complicated than it seems. So far, I've only bought from clearly legitimate companies that sell online, ones that are marked as authorized dealers of a number of brands. I had hoped I might find some interesting deals on eBay, mainly from individuals looking to sell pens they don't need. I'll have to be really careful.

Everything has been faked. Boxes, warranty booklets and pens. Interestingly, the Chinese seem to think snow comes in white or black, so their snowcap logos are often black.

The pen is an obvious fake because Mb only ever made the Greta Garbo in black and white.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
