No, there are too many papers that are different....just the basic hammered, laid, linen and marbled....not counting weight....or with luck what coating.

Of course I have been wrong before thinking CMP was better than people playing games with Doss.

Doubtful. While this is useful and may open up a future that begins to replace paper, the flexibility of pen and paper is far to important. We said the same thing about tablets years ago, but they, instead, augmented pen and paper, resulting in what we now have, where tablets are trying the combo of writing on paper with special pens and sensors to capture your writing on the device.

I understand the potential eventuality of replacing one with the other, but I don't see it happening any time soon, regardless of how similar the feel of the writing experience is.

Costs more than a pen and paper or notebook.

Like how e-readers replaced books? Smart phones replaced watches? Nope.

Or how we all work in paperless offices...

Wait until the next windows release and it will be obsolete and unsupported and you will have to buy v1.1333333 for it to work properly.

Well, e-readers did replace books for me, but I'll never give up wristwatches.

I can't see a tablet replacing pen and paper, or pencil and paper for that matter. There is too much convenience in a simple notebook and a pencil - with no batteries required. Paper and a writing instrument are easily more portable and less fragile as well.

I can certainly imagine that at some point the technology will advance enough so that pen and paper will be an exception instead of the norm.

Problems like portability, fragility, batteries, etc... will diminish over time.

An advantage of a pen is that you can write on a handy bit of paper. An advantage of paper is that you can write on it with any handy writing instrument. Therefore, it is useful to have a pen, and to have some paper.

If my electronic surface is in another room, it is not with me, and I am unlikely to scatter too many of them about the house and the shed. My stylus is most probably with my electronic device, and both are much larger than a pen or two.

There are thus practical reasons why the uptake of the technology may be high yet it will still not mean "the end" of pen and paper.

I recollect that as far back as with infrared, let alone wireless or NFC, it was promoted that one could exchange virtual business cards with another person's phone. Cardboard business cards would not be needed. That flew; like a brick. There are reasons for cellulose rather than silicon business cards which go beyond the immediate exchange of data between technological items.

Much of the world does not use electronics.

Too right. One of my bad habits my wife whinges about is me writing reading notes and to do lists on any convenient piece of paper.

Sounds like the end is near, maybe:

Time to rip up the notepad? reMarkable's tablet aims to mimic real paper and ink

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
