I just signed up here today, 12/26, so I clearly missed this get together. Rudy's Can't Fail Cafe is walking distance from where i live. Will there be another?

Pen Posse meetings are rather frequent. We will likely meet this weekend. However, our most common meeting place is in Millbrae next to the BART station. I'll probably call one tomorrow once I verify availability of Peter's (our normal hangout).

Rudie's works only for small groups and closes pretty early. It was difficult to have more than eight people at one time and we usually have 15-20 (more on certain special Posses). We'll try to work out another location in that area at a venue that can hold more people.

What is it that you do at a meeting? I'm in the bay area

You need to show up. What happens at Peters stays at Peters.

See you there next week but we won't discuss your presence.

San Francisco International Pen Show - The next “Funnest Pen Show” is on schedule for August 23-24-25, 2024.  Watch the show website for registration details.

Let me amplify. Only a few years ago FarmBoy's son was referred to as FarmBaby. Now he is in elementary school. FarmBoy has chosen to avoid saying much about what happens at Pen Posse gatherings because he understandably doesn't want the other kids at his son's school to tease the boy about insanity in the family.

Eating lunch at Peter's offers varied possibilities, some conventional, like salads or sandwiches or pancakes, others less conventional. One may order the largest apple-pie-like object any of us has ever seen, smaller than a Yamato-class battleship although conceived along similar lines.

I wasn't there when someone put a Montblanc pen in a chicken's mouth, an event photographically documented, IIRC. So I am looking forward to a whole pig with a Montblanc pen instead of an apple in its mouth. Opinion will surely be divided: some will think the MB 149 is good enough, while one of us (he knows who I mean) may hold out for a Hemingway or a Cleopatra.

It isn't all Babylonian luxury and decadence, though. In response to an FPN thread titled Who Is So Gullible As To Buy Third-Tier Pens? we have created an institution, the Box of Gullibility. The box is filled with pens people found themselves buying as part of a lot, with some actually desired pens and the rest a bunch of cats and dogs, which go into the Box. They sell for $5 each, and are not totally worthless: needed parts can be salvaged, one can learn to do repairs and nib smoothing, and some of the pens actually look somewhat attractive, with seductive colors or psychedelic swirls in the plastic.

The only down side is that none of us has any sense of humor, FarmBoy least of all.

Being among the busy-no-sense-of-humor-Bay-Area-Pen-Posse-people is a unique experience! I can only occasionally actually attend but have always enjoyed my time with them and have always learned something new!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
