Diamine Eclipse

Manufacturers since 1864, Diamine Inks relocated to this purpose built 'state of the art' factory in Liverpool in 1925, where they successfully carried on using the traditional methods and formulas for ink production. Over the years the company has changed hands and are now located close to the world famous Aintree Race Course

I believe this ink was made for those who want to break with bad habit of using solely black ink but are to shy to make it with vibrant red or green or bold orange. It's really dark but not as monotone as black inks as you see purple tones in it. While the color isn't really exciting it will certainly give some character to your notes, especiaally at closer inspection.
The ink is wet and feels nicely lubricated. I haven't observed any feathering but I use mostly good paper so I'm not sure how it would behave on cheap absorbent papers. Some bleedthrough may occur, I suspect. Also it's rather affordable ink so if you're not one of ink hunters & collectors but I enjoy writing with fountain pen and look for something less banal than black, this one delivers nice writing experience.
Personally I find the color boring in most pens and on most papers.

I like it. Try transcribing pages of notes written in it under incandescent or florescent lights late at night and you'll find it's soothing to the eyes were many colors either vanish or turn irritating.

I love it. As you say, almost black but not at all really black. IMO a lot of undertones. Mostly purple (absolutely fine for me) but also a touch of gray and brown, no, let's just say aubergine... Thanks for the nice review and reminder to those still in need....

How spooky! I'm expecting a TWSBI Vac Mini in the post tomorrow and had almost decided 100% to ink it with Eclipse, which I've not used for ages.

Your excellent (as always) review has just confirmed my decision! I rarely use black inks so this will be a nice treat. Thanks a million.

Interesting. I think of Eclipse (or at least my bottle) as being more of an "almost black" blue-black and haven't really noticed the purple component I'm seeing in your photos. I really need to put this ink back into something again, and have another look at it (possibly on better paper than the Piccadilly sketch books I use for testing inks...).

Thanks for the review. Especially since this is an ink I already have, so I don't need to be rushing out to buy more... yet....

I love Diamine Eclipse, it is that for me: the alternative to black inks, together with Sailor Chu-Shu.

Thanks for the review, Vis. Excellent, as always.

How would you say this compares to KWZ Grey Plum?

Darker and less complex. Plus KWZ has the edge on lubricating glide.

Don't like it but it sure conjures an eclipse!

I use diamine grey instead of black inks, looks great with any size of nib, shading from almost black through to almost pencil grey.

The Vac Mini arrived today and has been duly filled with Eclipse. A very pleasant line - I went for another EF nib on it - and I like the fact that it's good and dark without being black. Well-behaved and a great writing experience on all my papers.

I just recently tried this one. I adore stealthy purple black inks.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

I don't always see a violet element either.

Mon Capitain, is there enough colour to show up in the thin line of the TWSBI EF?

Thanks for another great review. I had a sample of this ink and liked it - this tempts me to get a whole bottle of it. I really like purple-black inks and this review really showcases that characteristic of Eclipse.

@AMber - I'm happy to hear you :) I too enjoy purple black inks but rather those that are more purple than black. Actually, come to think about it, I like dark purple - grays like Tamon.

LOL.

I am not a fan of Tamon (aka Bruise) because it is a fader.

@PDW, I think it will look more black in a fine or EF. I'll be posting some CRVs in the 366+ inks thread.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
