Today I Am Sumgai

I have never had a real Sumgai experience, so I was thrilled when I won an ebay auction this weekend for this:

Doesn't look like much, right? But check out what's under the hood!

Won for $31.35 USD. Shipping to USA address and everything included, it was $47.54 CAD (Canadian). I feel like that's pretty awesome! There was no mention of anything in the listing - I think the owner didn't really know what they had, which made it hard to search for. LUCKY ME!

Now I'm waiting to see if it happens to be one of the thicker, bigger models. Either way, I'll be happy.

:D

Gorgeous!

I saw that auction, but didn't bid as I prefer finer to broader nibs. Is it a broad nib, or something else? Regardless, congratulations on your purchase.

So, if it's worth more than the purchase cost, approximately how much would it be valued at?

I much prefer broader nibs, so I'm happy! It looks like a factory stub nib to me. :) I'm hoping this is a thicker larger model, but I suppose i'll see once it arrives.

Great deal on a nice pen.

Is it a crest or some other model?

Thin....The nib alone is worth $150 plus.

Very nice! Isn't it a wonderful feeling? Although you don't get the Sumgai of the Week award, because of that new person who found the 2 51s and three Snorkels in the desk he bought for $5 at Goodwill.... :o

I have a Snorkel with a factory stub that I lucked into just over a year ago. But the nib is Palladium Silver, not 14K. Was yours listed as being a Snorkel? Are there pix of the feed? (I ask because that nib looks to have a bit of an upturn at the end of the tines).

We want pix when the pen arrives!

S5. About a 1.4 Factory stub

Great great great score. Usually I get angry when I see these sumgai deals but I am happy to see you won it. As a fellow Sheaffer nerd I like to Saskia Underscore Madding pull in a great score. I just paid a pretty penny for my S4. You are in for a treat. That is a monster.

the only picture of the feed I have is this, which doesn't help to see just how upturned the nib is. I'm hoping to get this pen in about 2.5 weeks (I shipped it to a friend in the USA first, who conglomerates all my packages and then ships them to me in one big go), so I'll post more pictures then. :)

I know just what you mean, ink-syringe! I always hope that great pens go to really appreciative owners, and I promise I am VERY appreciative of Triumph nibs, as you know. :D I have an S4 and I definitely overpaid for it, but I love it so much, it's hard to regret it. :)

I had no idea what these Sheaffers are worth. If the nib is worth $150, that's a great buy. The pen looks like a Snorkel, so I suppose that adds more value. Congratulations.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
