Karas Kustoms K Replacement Nib In 14K?

Hi all,

I got my wife a Karas Kustoms a few weeks ago which she's been wanting since she saw it. She really likes it but the nib is constantly giving her hard starts. I looked over the nib and it and I can't find any issues other than the feed and the line between the tines not lining up all the time. I fixed that but it still has issues. Beyond that even though it's an extra fine the line seems more like a European fine rather than a Japanese extra fine which is what she really lines. So my question is this, is there a nib you can suggest in 14k extra fine (Japanese fine) that would fit the Karas Kustoms K? ( their nib size is a 5 I believe). Also the reason I'd like to go with a 14k is for a little more spring since she likes the line variation of my falcon and mentioned she would love that in her Karas Kustoms.

Thanks all!!

-Deke

Any Bock triple 060 should be compatible. However because you're looking for a Japanese EF, you are likely to have a problem. Bock, and Kaweco / Kara's kustoms branded Bock nibs just are not Japanese nibs with Japanese grinding.

Someone else can probably comment on which one would be springier, gold or titanium nibs.

You do not have a right to post. You do not have a right to a lawyer. Do you understands these rights you do not have?

Kaweco Supra (titanium B), Al-Sport (steel BB).

Parker: Sonnet (dimonite); Frontier GT; 51 (gray); Vacumatic (amber).

Pelikan: m600 (BB); Rotring ArtPen (1,9mm); Rotring Rive; Cult Pens Mini (the original silver version), Waterman Carene (ultramarine F)

The Karas web site doesn't show a gold EF for the K series at the moment but I would guess that is a matter of being out of stock. I'd shoot them a message and ask if they expect them back in stock at some point. I've found them very responsive and friendly whenever I have contacted them.

Remember any Japanese like EF nib is going to be a bit of a problem, meaning, the Bock nibs wont be as fine as you want and you will have a hell of a time getting to write smoothly unless you send it to a guy like Mike Masuyama or to John Mottishaw to fine tune the nib you get.

I've talked my wife into living with the current nib. I may eventually look for a nib that is worth to send to someone like Mike or John but right now I think she will be fine. Especially since I got her some awesome FP presents for Christmas. :D

For what it's worth I bought two Karas Kustoms pens (the K and the Ink) and both pens suffered from hard starts and skipping. I was able to work with the nibs to get them working and while I like the pens (something very cool about the look and feel) the nibs are certainly the weak link in the chain there.

Can you please let me know how you worked with the nib on the K to get it to stop skipping? I really like the look of the pen but I cant get it to write well. I purchased the F nib in Steel.

Thank you in advance for your advice

I had the same nib and the same problem - it was caused by baby's bottom. It was the one and only time I had to use micromesh rougher than 12000. I started with 3600 grit, did 3 figure 8s and 3 infinity signs, then tested it. Once it was writing without hard starts, I did the same with each finer grade, testing between, and working my way up to 12000. At one point, it had that pencil-like texture, and at one point, it sang (squeaked), but the 12000 grit ended that. It's one of my favorite nibs now. And yes, it is considerably fatter than my other EFs.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
