sorry, can't contribute anything of real use I'm afraid, but this has given me a very big nostalgia boost, and just a comment to say that many years ago I worked in Kingsway, fifty yards further toward Aldwych, and on the same side as Waterman House, in a building then called Imperial House. Waterman House was indeed on a corner, and every morning and evening when walking between Holborn tube and the office I would pass their windows and could see some of the more exotic pens - although in those days I had no interest in f.ps.

Just a few yards further still toward Aldwych was one of the major W.H. Smith branches, and can remember the Monday morning when for the first time Lady C. was offered for sale to the general public, having just been cleared of the obscenity charges - one of the more memorable comments from the trial judge, to the jury, being........... ".. and is this the sort of book you would want your servants to read"!! The queue to buy the Penguin paperback stretched for hundreds of yards back toward Aldwych.

Across the road, directly, were the ITV television studios and occasionally there was excitement when celebs. such as the Beatles brought the traffic to a halt.

Most similar buildings in that part of town had lifts which were manned by ex service personnel, and it must obviously have been a part of their employment regulations that they had to wear their full dress uniform together with peaked caps and medals - and they did look very grand.

Have to point out that I'm not remotely suggesting I was there in April 1931!!

I know almost less than nothing about Waterman's, but looking in the book the 52 appears to have been a very long lived model, and available in a variety of colours of woodgrain, ripple, cardinal, black and an equally varied array of low and high end finishes - some with very ornate g.f. furniture.

The example showing on the invoice to Fisher & Sons, must surely have suffered some horrendous damage to have needed a new barrel and cap, and perhaps a completely new pen might not have cost much more than seven shillings and a penny.

Interesting to see the separate listing for pen and cap!

Once upon a time it was natural for me to know that six shillings and sixpence plus seven pence equalled seven shillings and a penny.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
