Esterbrook Dual Inkwell

My first pen show this past weekend (won't be my last) and still relatively new to fountain pens. The first first thing I bought this weekend was something I was specifically looking for: a couple of inkwells so I could use some dip pens with some ink I really don't want to put into a pen and within 5 minutes, I found a vendor selling a dual inkwell from the 1940's for some company I've never heard of called Esterbrook. Bought it and I was intrigued watching the vendor swap out the nibs on the pen.

Got it home, put the ink I wanted into it, and have been using it happily every day since Sunday. Although the nibs are a little bent. It still writes pretty well, but I probably need to replace/repair the nibs at some point.

Got me to begin reading over what an Esterbrook was, so, of course, now I'll have to see if I can get a few over the coming months. Learned a lot.

Oh, in the pic, you'll have to forgive the intrusion of my beloved Visconti Hall of Music. It just seems to show up everywhere! :)

Oh-no! This is the start of many more Esterbrooks in your future! This looks like a very nice set. What two inks will you choose?

Congratulations on your marvelous find. Welcome to the world of Esterbrook. You now have the opportunity of really experiencing the wonderful world of fountain pens through great pens for a very meager expense. Here is a great site to start learning about Esterbrooks: http://www.esterbrook.net/ .

Two inks that I did not want to put into pens. One is Diamine Registrar's ink. I wanted a blue-black that was waterproof. The other is Diamine Majestic Purple. That's a color that matches my company's logo. I've heard the Registrar's will deteriorate pens over time, so I thought this was a good way to do it. Although I might just get a cheap burner pen for it if I need the ink portable. Same with the purple.

And yes, once I got this, I started reading about Esterbrooks. And I think I caught the Esterbug.

Nice. One of my personal favorites. As a teacher, blue and red are handy to have at the ready, and I love the convenience (at least, it seems convenient to me) of not having to find my pen, fill my pen, wipe my pen, just grab and go. Of course, if I weren't chained to a desk all day, maybe desk pens wouldn't be my favorite ....

Yeah. That's why I got this. 1/2 my week is at a desk, the other half is out. So when I'm by a desk (I work from home), I can work in sweats without pockets. It's great to just pick up a quality pen without searching and write with an awesome ink.

Beautiful set. How I wish - my Estie dipless would love it  Congratulations on such a find.

Was the first thing I found at the first place I looked at my first pen show. And my first thought was, "ooh! I need that!" One in million chance.

Oooo I love this, I have one of these in my office that I keep around. One is filled with Hero 233 blue ink that I have with an Esterbrook 9668 nib and the other is with Noodlers Manhattan Black with an 9550 nib. The black I use with general writing when it comes around and the blue is used for signing.

  • 2 weeks later...

I keep Diamine Registrar's in my Esterbrook Dip-less pen on my desk at work. I do all my bills and write checks with it, as well write short notes. The ink works quite well on a wide range of paper. I just wrote out the tags for my Christmas gifts this year with it. The reason I'm writing my gift tags at work is that my company offers a free gift wrapping service for employees. Take your stuff downstairs, and a couple of hours later you pick them up all wrapped. But they don't put tags on, just the post-it note you originally put on the item. I love that benefit!

Congrats on the desk set. I'm sure you'll find it quite useful.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
