Hi all, I've decided to learn to restore vintage pens, and i've got some lower end ones (so i can learn without breaking something priceless) coming in from ebay soon. i'm getting ready to order an assortment of sacs, what sizes would you suggest i get? i was thinking something like: 2x#12, 3x#14, 3x#16, 3x#18, 2x#20. does that sound about right?

It depends on what size pens you're thinking to fix. I'd go a little heavier on the 16s and 18s, but that's just because I tend to get slightly smaller pens. I believe all of the Esterbrook "J" types take a 16 so if Esties are your thing................

I use even numbers; 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22

I have used #16 the most, then 14 and 18.

I would think about getting more sacs. If the pens you get are mostly #16, you will run out fast.

BTW, most Esterbrooks use #16.

They have a table listing models of pens and the sac size for each. Richard Binder also has a good table on his site. Look for the pens you'll think you'll restore, and buy those sizes.

I doubt the 12s will be needed.

All depends on what one finds.

I have used a few #12s.

thank you all so much for your input- I'm going to get fewer of the small and large ones, and more of the medium sizes. Thanks again!

The bell curve peaks at 16, 17 and 18, so your supply should reflect that. A few are 14, an the big pens go to 20 or 21, so it may shift a bit depending on what you tend to buy. The odd numbers are important though. There was a time that I didn't stock them, but I have them all now. They're important especially for the Sheaffer snorkel and TD pens.

I'm just starting out and purchasing some inexpensive lots of pens on eBay so i don't break something valuable- i assume if I've gotten completely wrong sizes or screwed something else up horribly, ill just know for next time.

You do know that the Pen Sac Co. sells a small sac assortment for the amateur repairing their own pens?

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
