Anyone Buy Cartridges At All? Just Curious.

How many of you buy cartridges for your Sheaffer pens? I thought some people get them to travel because they can't carry ink around or are afraid of leaving a mess.

I usually just fill up my Sheaffer converter. (I've got a piston type).

I originally used rollerball like the Pilot G2, but w/ fountain, there's no worry about smearing. I'm pretty new to all this.

Cartridges are my preferred format whenever possible so I have more colors of ink in cartridges than bottles.

I have one pen that takes cartridges (Pelikan P30) and am using it as a test bed to look at new inks. I do this by buying assorted cartridge packs. - https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/topic/310523-assorted-cartridges-standard-international/

One only needs so many milliliters of an ink that looks like raccoon vomit to make a Go/No Go decision.

If it's a Go then either a sample vial or a bottle gets added to the someday-ink-purchases list.

I have not bought a cartridge since before Sheaffer stopped making them in the US. That said, I still use them but only as refilled. I have a box full of empties.

I use them but none bought recently in the last 15 years. I refill them using a syringe and needle.

Just the other day I had the brass carry box from my Imperial Brass Targa set out and was considering putting it in service; but reason said my Altoids box was still functional.

I had wanted that pen for a long time. A very nice set. I contented myself with the 1996 holiday pen, though. Then I never used it.

I still buy Sheaffer cartridges now and then because I have only one converter and several pens. I also re-use the cartridges until they start to leak, which seems to take years.

I used some Pelikan cartridges in one of these pens. Otherwise I use some old cartridges and squeeze them to suck up some ink.

My Sheaffer school pens were never blessed with converters. I use cartridges. I have long since run out of the Script cartridges. An International Standard cartridge works, when I make a pilot hole in the flat end, using a push pin.

Who told you that refilled cartridges make a mess ? Have you tried carrying some in a box ? (No, not loose in your pocket.) No promises. However, I did so throughout college, and never made a mess.

The Sheaffer cartridge/school pen does not fit a screw piston converter, only the old hard to find squeeze converter.

Someone said the Kaweko sport converter will fit. But I have not tried it.

I syringe fill the cartridge for my school pens.

I got all of my Sheaffer cartridges from old pens, which I then clean and reuse, if they fit on the nipple snug.

I have cartridges tucked in every drawer and bag at home and at the office ... they are life saver.

I have cartridges that fit International, Sheaffer, Pilot and a few Parkers too, but Sheaffer is the one that I use the most often.

I have several dozen Sheaffer carts, the result of being in the right place at the right time. I probably would not buy any more. Until I stumbled onto this little bonanza I was refilling old carts with a syringe. The convenience of the cartridge cannot be denied so I have a few at the office.

I ride a recumbent, I play go, I use Macintosh so of course I use a fountain pen.

I don't currently use cartridges, but have in the past. I can imagine using them frequently if I travelled by air regularly.

Useful when travelling - but I rarely use cartridges at home, other than for trying out c/c pens bought in the wild without a converter.

I do like the idea Chouffleur mentioned of buying cartridges to test out new inks. Can I ask, which is the ink that looks like raccoon vomit? (We don't have raccoons over here so I'm intrigued to know what raccoon vomit looks like....)

By the way, for flea market and car boot sale hounds, can I mention that old cartridges are a dodgy purchase. Check first that the ink hasn't dried up inside them. I bought a load of Sheaffer carts at one sale; half are okay, but half of them are almost completely dry. (I wonder if I could revive them by injecting a bit of water? but that's a hassle...)

Too many pens, too little time!

I have some Sheaffer cartridges knocking around somewhere, but I must admit I haven't bought any for ages. I tend to refill cartridges from ink bottles though. :)

Yup, all the ink is still there, only the water is gone. Pierce using a Sheaffer pen then add water and shake.

I don't have a Sheaffer right now, but for all my pens I have replaced the converter with the supplied cartridge. After using up the ink I just use a pipette or syringe to fill it up with ink from a bottle or sample.

The flow is usually much improved and they usually hold more ink.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
