My EF shipped yesterday. I cannot wait!

I had no idea about the whole HM/SM thing.

I'll chime in once I get the pen.

Mt Sapporo arrived today. Fast, right? Since yesterday was a holiday (Thanks Pam!).

This pen is definitely smaller than I was expecting. I admit that this in only a product of my own ignorance. I also recieved a Pel M205 and it is pretty much the exact same size. So the Sapporo is not a small pen, just smaller than I thought.

I need to have it posted to write. This is because the pen tapers right where is hits my hand and I need the cap on there. This does not bother me since I will drop, lose, or otherwise destroy the cap if it is not posted.

Punchline - I love the way it writes. The XF is great, my nib has the H on it but I love the way it feels on the paper. The line is much finer than my XF Safari but wet enough not to be annoying. Overall I am really glad I picked this one.

Oh yeah, I leaned towards the Mini, but am GLAD I got the regular!

Congrats on your new Sapporo! The fine nibs on these pens are so smooth and lovely to write with. They are on the smaller side but even my mini is comfortable to use once posted. I actually don't mind it unposted but that's just me. Enjoy! :D

To all the Sapporo users - any thoughts on how a medium nib would compare to, say, Pelikan F and M nibs? Anyone have a picture of one next to a Pelikan 2XX or 4XX? I am considering a Sapporo to replace my Pelikan 405 which isn't getting into the rotation as it should.

Thanks!!!

It looks like I will be the only one in the world with a Sapporo Mini with a broad nib. I hate fines and I just don't know how people can bear them. Each to their own though.

This review was what got me looking in the Sapporo's direction so thanks for that. I really wanted a 1911, but the budget is suffering some strain at the moment.

The pen is paid for and I just need to wait for our wonderful postal staff to give up their industrial action so that the distributor can send it to the supplier and thence onwards to me. Screwing the cap on to post it will certainly be a novelty. I can't wait to see the wonderful rhodium trim.

I have neither pen, but would imagine, from all the reviews etc. I have read that the Sailor nibs write smoother or as smooth as Pelikan nibs and are always finer. Eg. a Pelikan F would be a shade wider than a Sailor M, a Sailor EF would be far finer than the Pelikan EF.

See here: http://www.nibs.com/Tipping%20Sizes%20page.htm

If you also want to compare the actual sizes/weights of the pen (thanks to nibs.com):

Yes, I'm going to get a full-size Sapporo (the mini only takes cartridges) with gold trim - like you I would prefer the 1911 (rhodium), but it is too much...

Hey, I support their strike (the euphemism 'industrial action' is just too weak...)! Postal workers of the world (UK) unite! Etc. etc. :ltcapd:

It's about the time Sailor gave Pep a free pen, considering the number of Sapporo she has sold

I agree wholeheartedly that I really don't need another good pen beside Sapporo.

The H designation on the nib is for "Hard" or Firm - all my Sailor EF nibs are stamped H-EF. They are all perfect writers... except with certain inks, then they are too wide, and I use one of my custom XXXF's instead... :D

Here's an image comparison with an M200 - the same size as an M400. I find the Sapporo to be wider than the Pelikan but to have a much shorter barrel than the Pel. It eludes me why pen companies think that only people with lots of money like medium or large pens .

That said, the sapporo is definitely a shortie! However, I can just barely use it unposted as it barely rests on the skin between my thumb and index finger.

. . . I would recommend the EF Sapporo if you want to be wowed . . .

My new Sapporo EF just came in the mail today, and "wowed" is exactly what I am. I had heard about the fineness and smoothness of the Sailor EF nibs, but I don't think I was quite ready for just how fine it would be. That it can be that fine and yet so smooth is positively amazing. I have a Sailor 1911M fine, which I love, but the EF is much much finer. I definitely have room for both in my life.

It's a beautiful pen too (at least I think so), and the size is perfect for my small hands, even unposted.

:D I love my Sailor Sapporo with EF nib. It is my daily workhorse. Though it does not hold as much ink as Pelikan, it probably does not matter as i carry a bottle of ink with me at work most of the time. I do need to top it up once a day though, for the extensive amount of documentation i need to do everyday.

I love pens with small ink capacities... lets me move on to the next pen in the rotation quicker :-)

None of us can have as many virtues as the fountain-pen, or half its cussedness; but we can try.

My Sapporo rhodium trim with B nib arrived from Tokyo today, and already we're inseparable! This thing is smoooooth to write with - roughly equivalent to Euro M line - moderately wet. Just fabulous posted or not.

Nice review.

I like the sapporo but I find that it's too short for my hand comfort.

I prefer the 1911 full size. In addition, 21k's nib seems to be a little bit more flex than the 14's one.

But it's my preference.

Please let us know how it writes, Andy...I've been curious about getting a Sapporo Mini myself.

I have the 1911M and two Sapporo's - I couldn't decide between the regular and the Mini, so in a moment of madness I ordered both! I got the Mini with gold trim.

They use the same 14K nib and feed unit that the 1911M series does, and my three EF nibs are designated H-EF - for Hard Extra Fine. Sailor are 'wetter' writers when compared to say, Pilot pens, and this attributes to their legendary smoooooooothness. <img src="https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

These are fantastic little pens for sure!

Does anyone know if the Sailor Sapporo FP with a XF nib puts down a line equivalent to F (due to it´s wetness)? I´m thinking of getting another sapporo, but not sure about the line made by the XF nib. Is it equivalent to the Decimo F nibs (made in Japan, not the ones that are sold in the States)?

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
