First welcome home. Pull up a stump and set a spell. That's a nice fairly early example of the reborn Montblanc 146. The 14C nib instead of a 14K nib is one indicator. It should also have a grey ink window with no stripes. The case is also period correct. You have a great find there. It's not super valuable monetarily but priceless as a family heirloom. It would likely sell today between $250.00 and $300.00 in the condition shown.

Ink it up with some nice fountain pen ink (India ink will damage your pen) and give us a writing sample... or write a letter to a dear friend.

From the 1970s. Jar had the price range about right. Her is value to have the nib sticker still as some people seek out an EF and this makes it easier.

Thank you all for your expertise.

@meiers- It is brand new. Looks like was never inked up so I would leave it in its actual shape... I want to sell it so I guess I would give this pleasure to the new owner!

Any suggestions where I can sell it?

Ebay is pretty traditional.

If you stay around Fountain Pen Network and participate, for 30 days and 30 posts, you can sell it on the marketplace here.

For the MB experts out there, what are the chances this nib has any flex to it? I know it's impossible to tell just from pictures but your best guess.

Near zero.

It will likely be springy, and someone might try to call it flex, but it is not flex. I think it is best to describe the nib as softer than a modern, two tone 146 nib. This is a generalization based on my experience, and the nib on your specific pen may be as firm as a nail.

Whatever you have, that's not flex. People throw that term out and apply it to pens where it never belonged. I am nt saying you are doing that, but don't push the 146 nib too far or it will spring and become scrap metal.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
