Fountain And Dip Pen Set In Ghost Koi Alumilite

Scriptorium Pens

Recommended Posts

Here's a commissioned pair of pens made in the fabulous Ghost Koi alumilite by Jonathon Brooks. The dip pen is a Literati Academe, and is about 2" longer than I normally make them. The material was just too pretty to cut off. The fountain pen is a large Balladeer. The customer who commissioned it wanted the color and pattern distribution to be as near to a previously made pen as possible. I selected various areas from 3 long blanks to get the parts that best matched the client's wishes. It was a fun challenge! Lots of pearly chatoyance in this material that is difficult to capture in photos. :)

They are stunning creations. And perhaps what is equally stunning in my eyes is that they are coming to me! :D

I think when designs are this good I can breathe a sigh of relief that I don't have to come up with ideas of my own - I have no creative imagination for such things.

These are really beautiful. (The customer, EoC, posted photos of the Balladeer on another thread).

I dunno what all you have ink-wise, EoC, but if it were me, I'd put in a purple or a blue violet. And I say that as someone who doesn't normally match ink colors to pen barrels. But those pens are just sort of screaming for blue-leaning purple....

Question is, what ink do you think should be in for the inaugural writing session? :D

How about Diamine Eclipse or Pelikan Edelstein Tanzanite? Both are dark blue with a purplish tint to them that would roughly match the Ghost Koi colors.

Hmm, good suggestions. However, as it is Koi perhaps a Japanese ink would be more appropriate. May look into getting a bottle of Shigure (have a sample and like it).

  • 2 weeks later...

Breaking my silence because this must be said.

The Literati Academe has just arrived and I am speechless at the sheer quality of it and the beauty of the material. I do not even know how to describe the colours, the depth and the vibrancy. The pictures look really good but they are dull by comparison with the actual pen in hand.'

Simply stunning. I've already told Renee this, I don't think I have ever seen a pen quite this beautiful. The Balladeer should be arriving in a day or so, and I am beside myself waiting (it's been over 8 months after all :) ).

I've now seen pens from 4 different custom makers and based on that I can say the Renee is the best by a very wide margin.

Saving up for another now. :D

That's it. There'll be an update for the Balladeer, then I'm outta here.

Agh these are so gorgeous. I already have several cheap dip nib holders so I am in no need, but maaaan I am now seriously lusting after a Literati!! Well, lusting after all the pens they sell, really, but the wallet says no way! xP

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
