Waterman #7

Hi,

I found this Waterman #7 in a local auction today.

It seems to be in good shape. Gold cap ring and clip and lever in good condition.

Thanks. The cap band is black. The nib is marked "Black" as well.

Sorry for the poor pictures. I'm not much of a photographer.

Hah! Black Waterman #7 is the most valuable by a huge margin! The last one that I saw for sale was being offered at $5,000.

Congrats on your insane luck!

Well,.... don't know what to say really.

I thought it was just one of the 7's. I did know there was a difference in price between the colors, but not that much.

Thanks for the replies guys,

Hubert

The fountain pen equivalent of stubbing your toe on a gold bar. WOW.

Congratulations. An incredible find.

Please share a writing sample once you ink it up.

Best Regards, greg

Don't feel bad. I'm old; I'm meh about most things.

Yeah, I'll do that. The ink sac has dried out of course, but I can make a sample.

If I still dare using it, that is.

dried out, dried out, I would contact the seller for some refund at least.

Yeah, and the color has faded a bit as well. Can't understand people collecting this stuff.

I will write Waterman's a letter about this.

Did a small writing sample:

There is no railroading at this pressure and it could be stretched farther, but for obvious reasons, I'll leave it at this. Still very good line variation and a very smooth writer. Most of my pens that can produce hairlines like this are a bit scratchy, but this one is smooth.

Hubert

Since posting this, I found one other guy who has had one for 12 years and in that time he has seen two changing hands in the US. So, that's 4 confirmed.

I've asked him the very same question and he estimated the number to be double digits.

I think there must be some in collections all over the world, but I don't think there are many.

I have been extremely lucky I guess. Just imagine how many people would just throw an old fountain pen like this away when they find it amongst grannies stuff after she has kicked the bucket.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
