I've newly discovered the joys of writing with a fountain pen and I think I'm hooked. Looking to learn more about the pens, inks, papers and all that good stuff. I'm happy to have found this group!

Cheers,

Deb

Welcome, Deb !

It is fun to learn. Our membership is loaded with experience and generous people. My suggestion :

ASK ! I found there are often answers to questions, one would not expect. Ink and paper ? What do you want them to do ?

Which fountain pens are you currently using ?

Hello again, and thank you everyone for the warm welcomes!

My husband, along with my new journaling practice, are to blame for my budding fountain pen addiction. I don't know exactly what got hubby started, but after starting with a Nemosine Fission and an eye dropper pen from Noodler's, he landed on a Sailor 1911 Large black luster special edition as his current favorite pen - not that his collection is very extensive, yet. This got me to finally give my Dad's old Montblanc 149 a good cleaning, throw out the bottle of 40 year old ink, and try it with some nice, fresh Noodler's Heart of Darkness. Well, that got me going.

After researching pens - and this site was very helpful, thank you - I decided to try a Lamy Safari (EF) as a daily writer. The Montblanc is very nice but way too big for me to write with for long stretches. I love the Safari, but now I'm thinking I need a "nice" pen, too. I can see where this is going. :)

I also decided that hubby needs a nicer pen so I have a Pelikan Souverän M800 in black and green on its way for his retirement gift. Nah, I'm not that good a wife. I just want to have brownie points for when I pick out MY next pen!

Thank you all for this wonderful community!

I should get you to talk to my wife about ordering Pelikan M800's as gifts.

Actually, I've got her using now, too. She's gone from why would anyone ever need more than one fountain pen to owning 7. I don't think she's realized it, yet.

Enjoy the ride. Journaling and writing with fountain pens are good hobbies to have.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
