Amber - Pelikan Edelstein Ink Of The Year 2013

Pelikan Edelstein is the proof of Pelikan employees marketing efficiency. Beautifully packaged inks bear promise of amazing writing experience. The line is popular all around the world and concurs with the likes of Pilot Iroshizuku or Graf von Faber-Castell.

The packaging is really impressive.

The outer cardboard box is, more or less, standard. It’s not overisized and made from cardboard. The front panel has a slightly slanted extra facet with a colored panel that corresponds to the ink color inside. Care was also taken to keep ink secure in the box – the pair of styrofoam pads rest between the neck of the bottle and the box.

The bottle itself is really, really nice. The glass is thick, heavy and rectangular but with slightly concave sides. The lettering fits the design. I believe Caran d’Ache Chromatics inks bottles are more interesting, Iroshizuku probably nicer but Edelstein offers great and solid cap.

The inks can be bought in 12 colors, seven standard.

  1. Aventurine
  2. Jade
  3. Mandarin
  4. Onyx
  5. Sapphire
  6. Ruby
  7. Topaz

And 5 LE inks of the year

  1. Turmaline Ink of the Year 2012
  2. Amber Ink of the Year 2013
  3. Garnet Ink of the Year 2014
  4. Amethyst Ink of the Year 2015
  5. Aquamarine Ink of the Year 2016

In my opinion Amber is the best ink in Edelstein line. Ok, maybe not the best because this place should, objectively, go to Tanzanite (great lubrication, smoothness, some water resistance and so on, but I'm not crazy about the color). In terms of color though it's simp[ly fantastic. I used to have a bottle but it's long gone. Lord Epic sent me a sample so that I can make a review. What can I say. I just hope that one day Pelikan will offer a box with all Inks of the Year in it. Or maybe they'll make Amber part of standard line? One can dream, right?

Great review.

I love the Edelstein line, but unfortunately I was never able to find the Amber (and I really tried...). I would certainly love to get my hands on a bottle of this one.

Yeah, like Lam1, I found that Edelsten Amber fell into the category of "unobtainium" inks. :(

But seeing visvimitra's pix, I suspect that it's close in color to Diamine Anniversary Terra Cotta, or possibly Diamine Ochre. Whether the behavior (flow, dry times, etc.) are similar is something I can't answer.

Thanks for the review. I suppose there's a remote chance that a bottle might end up on the Bay of Evil someday (after all -- I was able to get a replacement for my Pelikan M200 Café Crème after the pen got lost, and for less than I had paid for the first pen; but of course I doubt that if a bottle of Amber showed up it would go for *way* more than the original price... :().

Lucky you :) And while we speak about Toronto, today I received a bottle of ink called Northern Twilight. I believe you should know something about it ;)

I know lots of it..... ;) ;)

I got to try Edelstein Amber at the recent L.A. Pelikan Hub. It's not an ink I thought I would like, from the name, but I used it for a while and like the color that it dries to. It also yields some interesting shading that makes it look attractive. I wish I had gotten more than the half-vial's worth which is now gone. Maybe they'll bring it back...

Really really nice ... if only Pelikan would release it as a regular ink of the line. Well... one can always hope :D

Me too. This looks like a great color and would be a reason for me to try Edelstein. None of the other colors really appeal to me.

I've got a bottle that's had 2 pen fills at the most out of it. Don't much like it myself, and didn't realise it was a marketable property. If I put it up for auction wonder if I'd get enough to make a dent in the cost of another VP Decimo. Seems unlikely. Although, come to think of it maybe a handbag would be more tempting!!!!! After all, four Decimos should be enough for anyone with a grain of sense, while it's impossible to have too many handbags. :D

I have never gotten the kinds of results you did with this ink.

I guess I should give it another try with a different nib and maybe a cream paper?

I like this Amber, but I was surprised recently about how much I like the Garnet (currently using it in one of my Nakaya Piccolos).

Lovely ink colour - I have half a bottle left and have to ration it, since Pelikan seems to not make this anymore :(

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
