Help With Sheaffer Identification

Hello,

I bought this pen because I like the old flat top, Duofold style, had thought it was a Junior, but the nib is just marked 3-25, Sheaffers Made in USA.

To my surprise, it's really small ?? Capped it's only 4 1/4 inches long, un-posted it's only 3 7/8 inches and rather slender. I was able to replace the sac with a no. 15 which was snug but worked.

Have seen a few threads on this, and could not conclusively determine if this pen is a A) 3-25 SC ? or B) a "midget" or "pygmy" version of that model, or C) a Ring Top pen someone franken-pen'd another cap on ? or D) a replica ? The latter had me wondering, as was not familiar with Radite, which was claimed to be, but the plastic and the plastic feed just appear newer than the middle 1920's era which seems these pens date to be.

I almost think it may be the same pen from another post that somehow found it's way through the resale market to my pocket.

Anyway, for $25 bucks and a quick sac replacement, writes nice, fine nib a bit scratchy, but once get right spot, smooth enough, feed was clean, writes well and unique for collection.

Thanks for your collective ideas on this, any info, I do a lot of research for work and can deep troll the internet for info with the best of them, but this one eluding me to conclusive evidence as to what it is.

William

It should (in an ideal world) have 3-25 on the cap to confirm. I'd say 3-25SC looks about right-- they're not a large pen. Here's mine, for comparison. There's a difference in the bands, but that might be down to year of manufacture-- assuming not mix'n'match, that clip says yours is later production.

I'm hoping someone with deeper scholarship will chime in. I've had a plow through my paltry references, and apart from the clip, that cap looks right for the 1930 3-25SC. I have a gap in my stuff, though, and by 1934 it looks like the (sort of) streamlined cap as one expects on the Junior is in place, which is about the same time that the flat-ball clip appears. We've seen often enough here that uncatalogued doesn't mean non-existent, so you might well have a 1935 straight-capped model... but here I pass into speculation. It could also be a replacement clip on an otherwise correct c.1930 pen.

It is a late 3-25S. In fact with this cap I would expect a 3 nib and not a 3-25 nib. Made anywhere from 1934-early 1940's. A 3 or 3-25 is the smallest pen in radite that is regular Sheaffer line and not a junior.

It's definitely marked 3-25 on the nib if you see OP photo, anyway seems this is what it is, appreciate all the help, seems this model is off the beaten path somewhat. Anyway it was a cool addition to the collection.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
