Mystery Ink

I recently ordered some items from Fountain Pen Hospital, among which was their exclusive, Noodler's Old Dutch Colony Sepia. The package arrived today, and let's just say that the sepia is most definitely not sepia...

I reached out to FPH and they quickly apologized and are sending a new bottle. Since it was in the box, there's no way they could have known.

But that still leaves the question ... what ink is it, since it's definitely not sepia... anybody have any ideas what it might be?

Edited for clarity.

And it looks great. I really liked Ellis Island and Manhattan Blue.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Thanks, but I don't think it's Ellis Island, because I ordered that too.

Here's the "Mystery Ink" lined up against every Noodler's dark blue in my collection. None of them really seem to fit. Weird.

Sometime noodlers shows some variation in colors .

Looking to your swaps here above, my prime of the common look much more green than your, for example.

I don't have Ellis Island, but it could still be that, or possibly Manhattan Blue (which is a lighter, and while it has a teal undertone is still mostly dark blue).

I didn't have that problem, but the first time I went to FPH, I bought a bottle of Old Manhattan, and then went to Art Brown's (back when they were still open) and bought a bottle of Manhattan Blue (which was formerly an AB exclusive). When I went to refill the pen that had Manhattan Blue I accidentally opened the wrong box and refilled the pen with Old Manhattan....

Part of the problem is that I was given a random Noodler's box at the AB checkout counter. So if you go by the box I have something completely different from the actual contents, and I had to write on the top of the box what it actually was.

But completely mislabeled? That's a new one on me....

I do think it's a beautiful color. I'm with UDog.

And I'm with both UDog and Amber. It does look like a great color -- just not sepia.... ;)

I wonder if FPH could contact Nathan for you and find out what ink it was supposed to have been.... Given that Noodler's is basically a one-man show, and how busy Nathan is (especially recently with all the new exclusives and LE inks), I'm actually amazed that there aren't more goofs of getting the wrong labels on bottles.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
