What Japanese fountain pen would you keep in your pocket with your keys? What pen do you always have on you to jot down quick notes? NOT a pen thats in a sleeve or case.

How about a Pilot Metropolitan. They write great and for 15 bucks, you shouldn't get upset if it gets scratched by your keys.

I carry one of my Pilot Preras (fine) in my pocket with me all the time. Yes, they have microscratches from my keys, but as my Preras are solid bright colored ones those scratches don't really show. They are very light and short, so I rarely feel them in my pocket even when I am wearing slimmer fitting jeans. Best of all, they can be bought for under $30 on Amazon - the build quality is very good for the price, yet it's not so expensive that I would stress out about misplacing them. All those things make Preras great everyday carry pens.

Not in my pocket, but always tucked into the pen holder of my Midori traveller's notebook (which is always with me) is my VP fine in black lacquer. Yup, it's scratched. That makes it all the more appealing to me.

Interesting that out of 6 replies so far, we have 4 votes for pilots, 2 of which are Preras, a pen that I've fallen in love with recently (I swear this pen doesn't get enough publicity!).

I would've thought the Metro would have gotten more hits on this. Especially with Goulet's hardcore endorsement of the F nib. Would like to see more responses on this and see what pen wins out.

I'm glad the vote for the Nakaya is keeping the pen sleeved. Would be more than a pity to see that fine lacquer punished by key scratches.

Namisu looks cool, but haven't had the pleasure of trying one. Is that a England-only pen or can we hold/try them here in the states?

Pilot VP is certainly made for quick jotting. Love that you bought the pen to USE it not to let it rust in its sheathe somewhere at home.

Nibs for Prera and Metropolitan are functionally identical and interchangeable, so an endorsement for Metropolitan F nib is also an endorsement for Prera F nib. And since they have same nibs, Prera's weight and length make it the better pen for EDC than Metropolitan.

Agreed. Also, I find that when the pen is clipped in pocket, the Prera tucks away better due to its clip design, so the pen top doesn't tend to knock onto things when walking around. It looks better in pocket to me, but that's just my opinion.

Ohto Taschen something or other. It's tiny it's metal and no one has stolen it because they don't know how to use a fountain pen.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Try the latest innovation from Engeika which is the PLAISIR which has some new CAP which ensures that there will still be ink in the pen in 12 months not bad for a very very cheap pen I have just ordered 5 of them.oneill

I seldom have pockets...

I put a keyring hoop and hook-thing on the pen sleeve so I can hook it securely to various inside locations (inside shoulder bag, backpack, camera bag) or wear it on a lanyard around my neck. As my EDC Nakaya Piccolo is clipless, the sleeve is necessary.

Platinum Plaisir , the metal barrel made it tough enough and its a workhorse nib and feed courtesy of the Preppy. Its also cheap enough that even if I should have lose it or damage it I can excuse myself ( curiously this model is cheaper here than the Pilor MR/Metropolitan ). And if I want extra nib option, just get the Preppy and pirate the nibs from them ( now with EF, F and M option ). Otherwise I would choose the Pilot KAKÜO over the MR/Metropolitan ) the Plastic barrel is a lot more user friendly than the MR metal one and its also cheaper yet, and everyone love the smiley face anyway. The Moji Aluminum ( standard model ) is a classic (bleep) / stick styled pen with a solid aluminum body and take standard ( so call international standard ) cart/converter but its a German feed/nib so the fine is not really fine enough.

These 3 would be my choice of bang around carry around ED use pen

Don't treat my pens that way, but if I did, it would be a Pilot Metropolitan.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
