Hi,

while looking for an orange fountain pen, I came across this one - has anyone bought one of these?

It is supposed to be resin over copper, but I am sceptical......

Cheers

Marc

I've never bought a Regal.

I think their pens tend to be in an uncomfortable half-way house. They are a bit cheaper than many western pens, are more expensive than the equivalent Chinese pens and show a bit of the design oddity exemplified by pure Chinese design - this is shown by the pen above in matching of a classical museum frontage engraving with a distinctly Chinese style pearl in a ball mount, something that is the antithesis of Greco-Roman design. The net result, for me, is that I've been put off getting a Regal, as the aesthetic feels neither one thing nor the other, the price is neither one thing nor the other and I don't really get it.

Regards,

Richard.

Richard,

thanks for the reply, I agree, it is a bit of a strange mix. Overcome by a sudden passion for orange pens, I have bought a Monteverde Catalina instead. Although it is strictly speaking not orange.....and the other one on the wanted list is the Delta Dolcevita Federico. Need to sneak that past the wife though :-)

I have two Federicos, one red and orange and one black and orange and they're sublimely beautiful and gob-smackingly cheap. I will be buying more. I'm signed up for mailshots from Marte Modena so I know when they have them on offer. Don't even think about that weird Regal when you can buy Federicos instead........ ;)

I had never heard of Marte Modena before, but it's one I am going to continue to watch, thanks. £43 for a 100% turned resin pen is actually quite impressive.

However, I must admit I prefer the design, size & colour of the Colkin Duragraph for £42 ( http://www.thewritingdesk.co.uk/showproduct.php?brand=Conklin&name=Duragraph+Fountain+Pen+Amber ).

That Conklin is very nice, but the material has a different character, a bit like amber. The Dolcevitas are more my thing :-)

And I am also signed up at Martemodena - could have kicked myself, about 2 weeks ago they were going for 59 € + shipping, and I didn't buy one :(

I've seen these very Deltas going for £120+ previously, so at those prices they are an absolute steal.

When I bought my Journal it was £54 and I've never seen it since for less than £100.

Timing is the key with these deals from Martemodena, I've kicked myself a few times.

After spending a lot on pens in general I opted for an orange Jinhao 500 as I just had to have an orange fp.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
