Is This A Townsend?

I apologize if I am not supposed to post this here. I believe this is a Townsend Century Medalist Ballpoint with 23K gold plated appointments. Can you confirm this? Is there any way to use a gel ink refill in this? I don't use this pen at all and would like to sell it one day. Any ideas how much it is worth used?

This looks like a Townsend Medalist ballpoint; the double bands at the end of the top of the cap are the giveaway. Although I don't usually care for ballpoints (unless they are Jotters; blasphemy, I know), I don't recall that Cross does a gel ballpoint refill. Others will know the answer to that one. As for value, a search on eBay for this pen in used condition shows values between $50 and $75, which seems about right for this pen; I don't think it is all that rare. Hope this helps, and best of luck!

Yes, that's a Townsend Medalist ballpoint or rollerball. As Arklawboy points out, the two bands of different thickness at the bottom of the cap is the best way to identify a Townsend. Other Cross pens have similar cap tops or barrel bottoms, but none have the Townsend's two-band design on the cap bottom.

Okay thanks for the comments. I am a noob to the world of pens and wanted to make sure. So a D1 refill wouldn't fit this pen? And if it did, do they sell them in gel ink? Also, can I post an offer to sell this in this Cross forum, or would I have to do this in the general classifieds section?

Monteverde sells D1 gel refills in many colours.

However this pen does not take a D1.

D1 refills are for multipens and pens like that.

But I think (not sure) Monteverde has also normal Cross size refills. Have a look at the Monteverde website.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
