I feel that they're not much different looking and I have the Carbonesque and have bought many of the LE's, not sure of this one? Any input/opinions appreciated.

You're right, visually they're very similar. I've never held a Carbonesque but I assume it's rather light and smooth. The Guilloche has a textured surface and is likely heavier than a carbon-based pen. The textured surface also makes light reflect in ways a smooth pen can not.

Oh... no comparison. I have both! Just got the Guilloche yesterday, but it is stunning! Obviously, the nib is the same. Don't buy it because you think it will write differently. It won't. The Carbonesque was one of my first "good" fountain pens. I've had it for more than 15 years. It is still one of my favorite pens. It has a hint of texture with the pattern on the barrel. The Guilloche is absolutely gorgeous, truly engraved. It feels to me like a blend of vintage texture (like the hard rubber Guilloche of early years) and the modernity of the retractable nib and click-button mechanism on the Vanishing Point. The detail on the Guilloche is really beautiful though. The tactile feel of the barrel is the appeal for me. I have a VP collection, and it's one of my favorite pens, but if it's not your cup of tea, you may not be impressed by the Guilloche, but if you're comparing the two: the Carbonesque is like silk screening of maki-e, while the Guilloche is the real thing.

Is the pattern done on the brass barrel itself or is there a sleeve on top of some material (hopefully not plastic)?

The pattern is on the barrel itself, parnesh. That's part of what makes it so incredible. You can feel the little ridges as you write.

Thank you. I really liked the look of the carbonesque but was disappointed that the texture was smooth and this has stopped me buying the pen. It will be very hard to resist getting a guilloche! I should avoid FPN, too many enablers :P

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
