Sailor Inks

Recommended Posts

Well, I don't know how to start this post!!!!! In the past, I have completely overlooked Sailor inks!!!! I have just discovered what seems to be a huge, HUGE amount of interest in these inks! And I found what seems to be a list of the inks the company makes, and sells, and the list is overwhelming to say the least.

Who can give me a short "write up" to introduce me to Sailor inks? Impossible, you might say! Well, if that is the case, I certainly will understand. Is there a "color chart" somewhere that will at least give a hint about the colors of inks they make and sell? Likely impossible.

As I said, I don't know where to start. Overwhelming!

Since a majority of the shop exclusive Sailor inks are so hard to get, I'd save yourself the frustration and just start with the seasonal line, which is SUPER lovely.

That is an image from a Sailor thread in the comparison section, and shows you the inks currently available. In October, the rest of the line will be re-introduced.

In my estimation, the breakout hits are Yama-dori, Tokiwau-matsu, Kin-mokusei, Rikyu-cha, and Shigure. :)

In Japan, Sailor makes a number of "bespoke" inks for some shops there. But as saskia_madding says these are fairly difficult to obtain. With Sailor expanding their Four Seasons line more colors will be available.

Vanness does carry the inks from the Bungubox store, but they carry a premium price of $43/bottle.

Well as migo said, Vis has a comparison and separate reviews of 52 Kobe inks.

I have a comparison of the previous 8 Four Season inks (as shown in Saskia's reply). I also have separate reviews for the 8 soon-to-be-re-released "old" Four Season inks.

Sailor also have 8 STORiA inks which are nano-pigmented, as well as two others: Kiwa-guro (black) and Sei-boku (blue black/teal). I also have reviews for 7 of the 8 STORiA's but they are not something I'd recommend personally.

Apart from these, Sailor also have 3 regular inks: Blue, Blue Black and Black. All the above inks are relatively easy to acquire.

Let's not go down the rabbit hole of store exclusive inks...

I agree with Saskia, start with the Seasons inks, they will keep you busy for quite some time. But add the nano inks, Kiwa-guro and Sei-buko to those and you collection is almost complete.

When you have gone through all those you can start digging into the shop exclusives. But watch your wallet...

I highly agree with recommendations for starting with Four Seasons line of inks first. Shop exclusive inks from Sailor receive a lot of attention from us, but Four Seasons inks are just as nice and well made. Their behavior is top notch, and their colors just as subtle and complex as their rarer counterparts. Furthermore, you can buy samples of Four Seasons inks online (both Anderson Pens and Vanness sell them - no affiliation, just a very satisfied customer), making it very easy to trying them out.

The tough part about shop exclusives is knowing when to stop buying them. All the ones I have bought have been very enjoyable, so I have to constantly remind myself that I can't spend more than my pen/ink budget every month...

Thanks for this very nice post.

Do these inks behave the same beautiful way that standard Sailor Jentle Blue behaves (very well)? If so where can I get my hands on some of that nice Nioi Sumire?!

These are all part of the Sailor Jentle line.

Fountain Pen Hospital has them, so does Vanness, so does Anderson Pens. Probably many other places as well.

To adopt a line: Get Yama-dori. The rest is commentary.

But to expand a bit, I agree with the votes for the Four Seasons inks. All of them are very rewarding; they perform perfectly, and they have multiple interesting characteristics. None of them is just "a color." Lots of great reviews of all of them here at FPN, which is how I got going on them.

I also really like BB First Love Sapphire, but that way trouble lies, as others have said.

I actually just inked a pen with Nioi sumire and it's more purple than the picture above suggests. On a cream colored paper it's hard to tell the difference between it and Waterman serenity blue but on white paper they're very different.

Oh, great, more ink to buy. Thanks, saskia.

Standard/Four Seasons Sailor inks can be bought from Amazon in the US for $13-15 (with free 2-day shipping if you have Prime). They carry the Storia line, too.

That Sailor RC really looks like a slightly lighter P&M Cigar.

I managed to get my greedy feral hands on the full re-issue set, and at local cost plus USPS shipping (friend taught a seminar at Kobe and got them for me.) but work has been hectic, and I am getting ready for Spinzilla, so I haven't tried the inks out yet.

Thanks White Lotus. I like nothing better than another excuse to visit Fountain Pen Hospital which is a quick subway stop from my office. Will go this week.

Please, for your sanity, turn and walk away. Sailor inks (probably the best inks on the world) only lead to heart-ache.

Step away from the rabbit hole!!!

Too many pens; too little writing.

The remaining eight are going to be in the US around October 14th, then I suspect a few days to get to retailers.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
