Favorites: Akkerman and MontBlanc

Least Favorite: Sailor, hands down! (which is such a shame because I love their inks but I won't buy them due to the inconvenience of their bottles!)

Montegrappa bottles are just the right size, just smaller than 50 ml, hexagonal, with a low center of gravity, a wide opening, and a beefy plastic cap. Montblanc bottles are great too.

The last thing I need is 70ml of ink, but I might have to get it just to get the cool Pilot bottle. The Namiki flying saucer bottle is attractive, also, I think, and definitely has a Japanese vibe to the design.

Most liked: current sailor and the artistry of Akkerman bottles. Both are have flaws for me. But I have to open a new Akkerman outside if the marble trapped ink. I live one atmosphere up in altitude. I open them in old clothes and outside in snow or grass, with rags in my pocket in case it explodes and spews ink everywhere.

Least fav is Visconti.

Favourite...Waterman.

Least favourite...Caran d'Ache.

One of my ink bottle peeves, is finding an ink I really like, then having to pay for the bottle it's being shipped/stored in. I mean, a nice bottle is nice, but you don't display inks in bottles...do you?

Aesthetically most favorite one is Caran d'Ache Colors of Earth series bottle besides J. Herbin's heart shaped bottle, the least favorite is Diamine bottles. Functionality doesn't matter much, I use syringe or Visconti Traveller Inkwell to fill my pens.

Akkerman (beautiful+practical), tall/octagonal Bungbox (beautiful and rather practical), Lamy (practical, but ugly)

-

the whole lot of it (worst are Noodlers, ESSRI, 100ml Herbin)

Greetings,

Michael

I've just noticed the Lamy bottle on another thread - I don't own a bottle so it wasn't at the forefront of my mind but surely their bottle be the most practical of all.

Favorite for being function is the akkerman bottle - easy to fill from. I'd also add the Noodler's bottles as being a favorite. Yes, they don't have a heavy bottom and such, but the opening isn't going to get in the way of any size nib.

Unlike some bottles from diamine that are so skinny there are some pens that will never work once I get just a few fills from the bottle. Sailor also gets a downvote for being too short. When I have to tip the bottle or do other gymnastics with a full bottles... eh. Thank goodness I like their ink so much.

Favorite - MB Shoe

Least favorite - Sailor.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

I have three that are the bottles of the inks I use the most of !! My fave is the octagonal Omas bottle. I like it's appearance as well as it's functionality. With it's 8 sided slanted bottom faces it allows you to get all the ink out of the bottle !! Next is the Waterman bottle with it's unique sort of trapazoidial shape. It also allows you to lean it over and get all the ink out!! My third choice is Pelikan's vintage square bottle with the pen rest that is still available for the 4001 inks.

A plug here for a new addition to the ink bottle field: Love the new insertable plastic reservoirs, the Ink Miser and R & K's new insertable reservoir. Have several, find them to be a practical way to work with ink.

The inserts into the bottle are great, make even funky bottles useful. All you need is a bottle that is wide enough to drop the insert into. For my R & K inks, I use their system as it just fits nicely. For Noodler inks, I use the Ink Miser without a base. Makes even the tall, narrow Noodler bottles work out well.

For mixing inks and testing, I use the Ink Misers with a base. Prefer the clear over the black, for obvious reasons. If you can't see the level, it gets a lot harder. But both get a fair amount of use. Especially if I need to thin my Navajo Turquoise or Walnut to make it work out right.

Enjoy,

Yours,
Randal

From a person's actions, we may infer attitudes, beliefs, --- and values. We do not know these characteristics outright. The human dichotomies of trust and distrust, honor and duplicity, love and hate --- all depend on internal states we cannot directly experience. Isn't this what adds zest to our life?

The modern Caran D'ache bottles are my favorite in terms of looks. Noodler's bottles are actually up there. I like the historical references on the labels and I don't mind that it's hard to use the last drops, since you can use a syringe

I also enjoy the hidden messages that you can only find when you use the entire bottle.

I can hardy wait! But, --- but I have a problem! I have about ten bottles of ink that I am "using out of" now, and it is not likely that I will live long enough to empty the bottle! Life is just full of problems!

Write on into the golden sunset!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
