Namaste to all,

I stay in Mumbai and i am very much tempted to try out new inks of various brands. Presently i am interested in trying out Bril and the new Daytone inks. The real problem is, to try out Bril in have to place an order of atleast Rs. 500/- which will end up 25 bottles. I have planned to have 2 bottles of each color for future use. and rest bottles will be shared with my another frnd. So inshort i will be stocking up 14 Bottles :-P.

I am also planning to buy those DayTone Ink pack of 15 different colors. So at the end i will have a huge collection of Inks which i will definitely use it.

So is it safe and okay to stock up inks ? Will they degrade or damage my pens later ?

Sorry this may be a funny question :-P

Pls help. Thanks

Jai Hind.

In boxes, in darkness, in a cooler place I should think not. I kept some of my Sheaffer inks a long time. Others will chime in but many have shelved their favorites in case they were discontinued.

I had the same problem with bril. Ordered 12 bottles and some other things to total 500. Why can't they just charge shipping? :-(

Hi,

I stock up inks for a long time as I love to try out new inks.

Both my Sheaffer Skrip and Waterman Intense Black are not affected due to storage for a long time though I'm not sure of the others.

Nikhil,

If you are still having storage issue, I could purchase couple bril blue's from you. Let me know, I am based in Mumbai as well.

Obviously, it depends on the particular ink, but I regularly use Parker Quink Blue/Black from the 1940's and have several bottles waiting on the ink shelf.

Deterioration is usually not the issue. Mold is the risk -- floating, slimy strands of DNA. When such contaminates a fountain pen, there can be long-term problems. Unfortunately, the beauty of your country also promotes this problem. Unopened bottles can endure many months, or years, if stored in a cool, dark environment. Keep opened bottles similarly, opened bottles, in a tropical environment, will have shorter life span.

Good luck.

It really depends on the INK... Most inks will be fine, but for example Organic Studio Inks, a bunch of colours degraded after only a year.

If both Bril and DayTone have been around for a long time, then you should be fine.

I regularly use inks from the 1930's,40's,50's,60's to the present without any issues.

My stock of Bril and Daytone inks is a few years old, not all used yet but some have been. I have not seen any problems...

I keep all of them, used/unused/opened/unopened in drawers, not inside their boxes because they did not come in boxes. The Daytones are in bottles with an eyedropper-like dispenser so I cannot see if there is anything solid in them... but from how the ink comes out I am assuming NOT.

The Bril looks just like they did when I first got them.

While I have not had them VERY long, the experience with other ink brands is similar. I have some decades-old Quink and Waterman bottles, and the ink in them is just fine...

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
