Noodler's Pacific Dawn At The Golden Gate Review

Hi all,

Today's ink review will be on the recently launched Pacific Dawn at the Golden Gate!

The background story of this ink is this:

"Pacific Dawn refers to the same Sun starting its journey across the Pacific from San Francisco to Singapore. This ink is a distinct blue like the dark blue one sees in the ocean at Dawn. When dried, a few drops of water like the morning mist will show red at the borders as if dawn has arrived

Noodler's Pacific Dawn at The Golden Gate is the Straits Pen Exclusive for the San Francisco Pen Show. A Bulletproof Blue ink with the Halo of Dawn, this includes a double sided label of Fort Mason on one side and the Golden Gate Bridge on the reverse. (Note that the Blue is bulletproof but the red element is not)"

(Extracted from http://aws.straitspen.com/shop/inks/noodler-s-ink/noodler-s-pacific-dawn-at-the-golden-gate.html)

This is a blue black (when wet) but dries to a blue grey. It's an interesting change!

The first ink that popped into my mind for comparison was 54th Massachusetts. But that has green in it. Pity I don't have Bad Belted Kingfisher or Bad Blue Heron to compare it to. Maybe our US friends can chime in?

It's definitely wetter than 54th though, which is a welcome. I found 54th too dry, which is why I don't use it despite the nice colour! (For me, blue blacks rank a close second behind blue as my favourite ink colour)

I did the review on both 100 gsm printer paper (what I print my ink review sheets on) and Rhodia 80gsm (what people are familiar with). Without further ado, some pictures!

Done on 100gsm paper

Done on Rhodia paper

The last two pictures show the red halo that comes out in water. They were done on Tomoe River Paper.

The halo is around the word 'fountain'. Yes I know it's spelled wrongly, it was late! ><

Really obvious where the halo is!

PS. It does cause quite a bit of nib creep though - just be diligent in wiping it!

EDIT: Spelling and grammar mistakes.

Thank you for showing us the ink introduced @ the San Francisco Pen Show; & for that amazing capture of the "halo." It is indeed a wonderful example of a unique ink & your review makes it even more desirable. Enjoy!

Ooo, a 54th Massachusetts coloured ink that actually works. Exciting.

I'll keep an eye out for this.

Thank you.

:)

Hi Tas,

You're welcome!

This is an exclusive ink though - perhaps if you have a friend visiting Singapore you could get them to bring it back for you. Straits Pen does ship overseas, but shipping is atrocious - for example, two bottles to Down Under cost $22.

Interesting. On first look, it reminded me of Blue Upon the Plains of Abraham (exclusive to Wonder Pens in Toronto). But then the close-up shot showing the "haloing" made me think more of Miles Standish (one of the LE inks from last year's Commonwealth Pen Show. But, OTOH, -- it didn't look blue-black (or even blue-grey) at ALL... More of a dark turquoise.

How very peculiar.

Thanks for the review. This is one I'm going to have to think about for a good long while -- the shipping makes it pretty pricy for a 3 oz. Noodler's bottle. But the dry time and waterproofness -- and that strange color that looks different in every photo....

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

It looks dark turquoise because it's been soaked in water - the reviews show a closer ink colour.

To those who are interested in the ink, I have a few suggestions you could try:

There are already bottles in the States, so if you can convince the people who bought this to share... ;)

Or if you know someone who works/is holidaying in Singapore, you could get them to grab a bottle.

Alternatively, a MO would bring the price of shipping each bottle down to a more reasonable price... several ideas for your consideration.

I saw a post on Facebook last week indicating that this ink feathers on Rhodia. The review above states that there was no feathering on the 100 gsm printer paper, but the review on Rhodia doesn't make a statement about feathering.

Why would an ink feather on Rhodia but not on printer paper?

No feathering on Rhodia on my side.

Well, because paper is a finicky thing :P storage conditions, how oily your hands are, how long the paper's been sitting etc. can affect how it performs.

Or maybe because that Rhodia that feathered was from a bad batch?

Looks pretty great. How's the smell?

Not as strong as some other Noodler's ink - it smells like paint, but it's not a strong smell.

Is halo different from sheen?

I would say so. Sheen is present by itself (of course a good paper like TR will help!), without any additions but this halo comes out only in the presence of water.

I don't see sheen on this ink - no shading either. Just a very uniform, rich blue black that dries to a blue grey.

I have no desire to keep mine. Still a full bottle (with box) minus a few drops for test-writing. If anyone wants to trade, please PM me.

I love the smell of fountain pen ink in the morning.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
