Platinum 3776 Music Nib Question

Recommended Posts

I have lost my favorite drawing pen, a Platinum 3776 with Music Nib. I always buy my new pens in person to feel them, but I had some Amazon gift cards. Long story short, the pen came, looks new, has a tag on pen in Japanese, no warrenty, in a platinum box. The satin bed is glued to the bottom of the box, Usually it can be removed.

The nib feels different from my first two; it feels stiffer, more plasticy, it is broader in the fine stokes than any I have had before.

Anyone with experience buying on Amazon? I am tempted to return this and purchase one at FPH so I will know exactly what I am getting.

Btw, I have lots of experience with fountain pens so this is not just a new pen feel.

I only have two Platinum Music nibs, one on a new Century #3776 and the other on a Nakaya Piccolo. I have not found a great difference between the two but both are stiff with wide verticals and moderate but not skinny horizontals.

Return it. You know what the nib should feel like. I've bought many things from Amazon and have been happy but they were things like books, toasters and stereo receivers. Amazon is such a Goliath and deals with so many suppliers I think we should buy our pens from known sources like FPH and other reliable dealers.

I love music nibs as well, Platinum is great.

No harm in trying Amazon. Return it if you are not pleased. If you are not pleased now, will that improve with time?

Thanks for the examples. I once tried a Nakaya with music nib at the last NYC pen show - i thought the nib was very similar to my platinum.

I got mine from Mottishaw last month. Silky smooth and broader horizontal lines than I expected. I'd say it's pretty stiff. If you don't have faith in what you have, I suggest sending it back. Wait until paychecks start flowing, and get one from a reliable source.

I may die before I get there.

The Nakaya nib is basically the latest #3776 nib with different stampings.

Pictures? That will help us tell whether it's a different type of Music nib. I have 5 music nibs from the Platinum company. 2 that are Platinum 3776s and 3 that are Nakayas. They are stubbish extra broad nibs that really have rather broad horizontal strokes.

Hard to post pix. My last two Platinum music nibs had a great difference in vertical and horizontal, that's what made me curious about this pen.

Nakaya uses the modern #3776 nib and this might help.

  • 1 month later...

Follow up: I retuned the pen I bought on Amazon and purchased one from Fountain Pen Hospital. (Platinu 3776 with Music Nib) . Big difference!

So you got the pen from FPH and it's actually different? And more than just a variation in nib quality? You're saying the pen body feels weighted differently? How strange!

I purchase most of my pens through Amazon and most purchases have gone well. I had to return a PCH912 FA but the return was simple.

I've purchased three 3776 Century pens through Amazon: F, EF and UEF. The first two were Japanese priced but still shipped Prime by Amazon. They were perfect.

The UEF came from 3rd party in Japan... It took some manipulation of the nib to get it to flow (the tines were insanely tight on arrival.) But now it's one of my favorite pens.

All in all I think Amazon is safe (except for Safari purchases) but people should know the return policies are different depending on whether you get something shipped BY Amazon or whether it's shipped from the 3rd party. (Amazon return polices are better.)

I do believe nibs have variation and I wonder if that's what you experienced. I have four Pilot Custom Heritage 91 Fs, for example, and they all feel similar but noticeably different. On the lower end I've noticed differences between Pilot Metropolitan nibs as well.

What's the problem with buying a Safari on Amazon?

The newer Platinum boxes have the glued bottoms, so I'm not surprised there. Also, it may depend on what your old pen was. Platinum's most recent music nib comes in the Century model, which has a new nib and feed design.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
