Accidental Edelstein Aquamarine Look-Alike?

I've been wanting a dark blue-green ink for a while, and a little while ago, I came up with the idea of mixing Private Reserve DC Supershow Blue (American Blue would probably also work), Private Reserve Ebony Green, and distilled water. Here's what it looks like, on Rhodia dot paper:

Looking at it in Photoshop's colour picker tool (after colour correcting the image), it seems very slightly on the green side of blue-green. Comparing this to other ink reviews on-line, it looks almost exactly the same as Pelikan Edelstein Aquamarine (in colour, if not in properties). It will be interesting to see how this ink works out for me over the next few weeks.

Stefan, it looks great!

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Update: The recipe is actually 2 parts DCSSB, 1 part EG, and 4 parts water. When I mixed up the original batch, I used "0.5cc" of DCSSB, "0.5cc" of EG, and "1.5cc" of water, hence 1:1:3. However, measuring 0.5cc (hence the I-don't-really-mean-this quotes above) with a 2.5cc syringe isn't very accurate.

When I mixed up a larger batch using 1:1:3, using 5cc of each ink and 15cc of water, it ended up much greener. I tweaked it some more until I had 10cc DCSSB, 5cc EG, and 20cc of water, at which point it looked the same as my sample above.

Now I'm tempted to buy a Pelikan M205 Aquamarine pen. :)

  • 3 months later...

I mixed about 3ml of Serendipity Marine using carts. It is positively gorgeous. Thanks, stefanv, for this recipe.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
