Hi Everyone, Just joining to meet fellow FP enthusiasts. I've been writing daily with a FP for about 20 years. I have a Parker Sonnet with an 18K medium nib, It's a finicky thing, and I want to understand more about FPs so I can fix it myself if possible. Happy to be here!

Welcome !

In what way is you Sonnet "finicky"? How often do you flush the nib ? (Not just run water over it, but actually FORCE water through it ?) This is how I do mine. I trim the rubber tip, in small increments, until it fits thghtly over the section.

After a clean flush, I use the bulb to force air through the nib, to dry it.

What is your favorite ink ?

Welcome to FPN!

Sonnet nib and feed are easy to clean. The nib and feed section screws out easily.

My Sonnet doesn't flow well. I fill it, it's good for a few lines, maybe half a page, then it dries up. I haven't ever forced water through it, but I'm realizing from looking around I should get a bulb syringe and force water through. Some people recommend a 1:10 ammonia solution for this. Do you think that's necessary? I've always used Mont Blanc Midnight Blue. Was thinking maybe a Parker ink would work better in this pen.

Welcome !

Cleaning out the nib regularly ought to take care of it, I should think... There shouldn't be any problem with Mont Blanc ink, or really any other fountain pen-friendly ink, as long as you get it on a regular maintenance schedule. :-)

MB MIdnight Blue was, until recently, an iron gall ink, so you might have some ferrous particles in there that need to be soaked out. Add a little bit of vinegar to the flush for IG.

Yeah, if you have used this pen for 20 years and have never put water/flush through it before, then I imagine that ink now is trying to run past some sediment/gunk that has built up over time. You should browse around here and find a video on youtube about how to disassemble your Sonnet and give it a good soaking/cleaning. Even more so if you have been using an iron gall ink over many years.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
