Quick! Help Me Pick A Nib For My Fc Pocket 66!

Hello all,

I've been on the waiting list for Franklin Christoph's Italian Ice Pocket 66 for some time now, and the wait is finally over.

I'm about to order my pen, but i'm flip flopping between nib choices. I'm trying to decide between a S.I.G. or standard nib.

I want to go with a fine point either way, but i'm also wondering how much smoothness I will be losing going from my typical medium to a fine.

I want to get this pen ordered tonight, so don't worry about including any long answers... just give me a few quick lines of your input and opinions. Would you go with the S.I.G. or standard, and do you think a fine would be smooth enough to satisfy me?

Thanks FPN!

I have a SIG Fine on a FC XLV 45. It writes on the finer side of fine but still manages to show a little line variation. FC have done a great job on the nib - it is smooth, no harsh edges & with a generous ink flow. I'm very impressed.

Would you say the SIG nib is smoother than a normal tipped fine nib?

Well that's rather like comparing apples & oranges. All I can say is that here are no harsh edges, the ink flow is generous and the grind gives a character to the nib. The FC description is an accurate one; the nib has the smoothness of a stub, with the line variation of a CI. My other standard FC steel fine is not as pleasant to write with as the SIG, but that is just my personal opinion. I'm probably not the best person to ask about smoothness anyway, because I prefer some feedback from my nibs. Overly smooth is not a characteristic I seek or desire.

Apologies if I'm not being much help :-/

No need to apologize, I may have asked an un-answerable question :P I think i'll go with a fine SIG nib. I saw quite a few writing samples with it and it looks just about perfect for me. Thanks for the replies!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
