New Place To Store My Pens And Ink

Okay so it is just a desk... but not to me. I spent $1700 on the raw materials and over 120 hours of my time making this beast. The drawers are lined with vinyl that has a snakeskin pattern to it. I plan to possibly make a few dividers for the drawers to better separate and protect both the pens and ink. The desk is made from solid walnut and walnut burl veneer. The base is finished with shellac and wax and the top is finished with a bunch of coats of polyuerethane. I would love to hear anyone's comments... both good and bad. After nearly 3 years of tinkering with this thing in my spare time I kinda almost feel like something is missing when I go in my shop. Now I know how empty nesters must feel :D

Absolutely Stunning!

It's beautiful, jj...a lot of blood, sweat, tears and love went into that and it shows. Kudos!!

Thanks a bunch. I forgot to add the best part. I moved the desk to my office this morning. The first client who came in had to sign some paperwork on it. She pushed harder than I think I have ever seen anyone push on a ballpoint pen in my life when she signed. I looked at the top of my desk this afternoon and... sure enough... there is a scratch that says simply "POA 8/22/2016".... so I guess that means its been christened??? :yikes:

That desk is absolutely stunning. I, honestly, don't have the time, patience, or skill to craft something like that, so I sincerely tip my hat to you.

Thanks a bunch. After 2 years I kinda started wondering if I had the time or patience to finish it.

I have NEVER seen a more beautiful desk. I cannot imagine the ability to design & craft it, even tho my Father was born in a house built by his Grandfather! I just cannot imagine the pride you must feel for it's creation. Enjoy & I know it will make "coming to work" an even greater pleasure.

Thank you for sharing. And thanks for including that Black CAT in the picture.

When I first opened your thread I thought you were going to be talking about a restoration project which looked fantastic then to read that you had made it yourself WOW.

Your veneer book matching is excellent working with such large pieces is very difficult.

I wondered if you had any work in progress pictures to share.

I'm a hobbyist woodworker and my aim is that someday I'll be able to make something like this. It's absolutely stunning.

I also own a desk almost as lovely as this one that I inherited from my father. However, when I moved to France I had to leave it at my inlaws' appartment. It was too expensive to ship it here. I hope some day I'll have enough discretionary funds to do it. I miss my desk!

Enjoy it!

Absolutely beautiful.

I love the wood - you are a real craftsman to produce something so exquisite.

I'm jealous. But then something like that wouldn't fit into my house and I work in a cube farm.

That's amazing, and all the moreso because you made it yourself! Congratulations on finishing the project; I have no doubt the desk will bring you immense satisfaction in the years to come.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
