Hello,

I am considering the Sailor 1911 Large with the 21ct nib, does anyone here own one and have any opinions on this pen, I have larger hands and prefer a medium nib with more flex.

Thanks Again

Matt

For what you want you would be best off buying another pen. Sailor won't give you any flex. I'm not sure exactly what degree of flex you want, but if you want 'old fashioned flex' then go for a vintage pen. In modern pens you have some soft nibs such as the Pilot Custom series with a soft nib(eg SF or SM), a Pilot Falcon, or a Noodlers Ahab or Konrad. The most flex you'll find from the modern pens is probably in the Noodlers pens, but they're not as good as vintage flex. For almost all modern pens, best not to try to flex them because you'll ruin the nib.

It's an old wives tale that more gold equals more flex btw. I have a Sailor Pro Gear 21k and Sailor 1911 with zoom nib and they're both very stiff.

I've had the Pilot Custom 912 with FA nib which is the most flex I've ever experienced - but it requires special attention when writing so I returned it. I prefer the 1911 overall. The nibs can vary a bit, so it would be good if you can try it out before buying!

I've got the pen. It's a nail. A very pleasant nail, with the patented Sailor hiss and feedback.

If you want flex for cheap, go the dip pen route until you master the art. And it is quite an art. Then, if you take to this art, look for a vintage pen. Despite the claims, Ahabs and the like are not really 'flexible' the way a dip nib or vintage pen can be.

There are Zebra comic dip nibs available on Amazon that are said to flex well. I have a couple but have not yet tried them.

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

Pilot falcon has a soft nib. Good line variation and easy to handle. Pilot fa nib is also soft but the feed sometimes can't keep up. Also oils from your hand can cause some problems.

If you want true flex go vintage. I have many vintage flex and the most useful is an eversharp skyline. I have more flexible pens but they are so small they don't get much use.

Yes, Sailor 1911 large is a nail. I have one. Great pen - I can write with more precision with this pen than any other. But it is not a flexible pen.

Jinhao 9019 "EF" nib running Birmingham Railroad Spike

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
