Hi! I'm a student from Jakarta, Indonesia I love pens and any kind of stationary, for that matter.
I like fountain pens, and do own and use many of them, but what I'm really into are drafting stationaries (pencils, technicals pens, and such) and other stuff of a technical nature. I just love admiring the technical looks and straight lines of the pens and pecils like the Rotring 600. Aside from pens and pencils, I like cutters too, I wonder if there is a site like this too for that?
Unfortunately, Indonesia is not really a good country for this hobby. Available brands of fountain pens are very limited and it gets worse when it comes to drafting pencils... And the stuff that's available in the general stationary stores are mostly quite expensive ones, which I can't really afford. I'm grateful, though, that now, starting this year, I can see the Rotring 600s and 800s with my own eyes in the bookstores. I looks like there's hope for me after all!
It's worth noting that here the fountain pen is a rather unusual thing to write with. You see a few them in bookstores, but to see someone actually writing with it is very rare. We're not taught to use them is schools, like some other countries, from what I've read.

Welcome !

 

I have a couple of Rapidiograph pens (piston-fill), like those used in drafting class, long ago. If you happen to encounter one, it is worth noting that the drafting point can be removed. The thread is same as that of Esterbrook J-series nibs. Mine is equipped with a #2668 Medium nib.

Greetings from Kuala Lumpur... there really are only a small number of us fountain pen users in this part of the world. Occasionally I find there are advantages to this though, such as limited edition inks from Sailor not selling out quite as fast as they do in places like the USA! :lol:

 

Are there good fountain pen shops in Jakarta? In Kuala Lumpur, I am happy that there are still a few nice brick-and-mortar fountain pen shops I can go to.

No I think, if you're talking about specialty pen shops. As far I knows the usual bookstore's fancy pens sections are the only place to go, for the most part. But you can find some sellers selling them online, thank god :)

When I was in college and graduate school, there were many stores at which I could examine, try, and, on occasion, purchase pens (the ones that I could afford, of course). Now, my pen buying options are limited to a store in Boston, MA (when I can get there), Amazon and JetPens for low-end pencils and pencil leads, and eBay (always available) for the majority of my pen-buying. Most people, especially my students, use disposable ballpoint pens and they do not take pleasure in writing. Many do not know what fountain pens are, let alone use them. This is a sad thing as writing is an enjoyable experience, and using fine writing instruments makes writing all the more enjoyable.

 

Since your pen-buying options are limited, it may be time to check out the online options. The downside to online pen-buying is not being able to try the writing instruments before you buy and not being able to take the writing instruments home with you on the day on which you buy them. At times, the anticipation and the delayed gratification can be enjoyable while searching for the right pen at the right price and, then, waiting for the pen to arrive in the mail.

Yes, for current production models, sadly online is the only option for now. But I've been shopping online from private local sellers, selling older, second-hand stuff and have gotten very good deals indeed :)

      I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

      Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

      I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature.
