Pelikan Fine Leather Black Triple Pen Pouch - What's That Smell? Yikes!

Update:

I have since returned the Pelikan case and received a full refund. I may not be the sharpest tool in the shed. But something tells me that no amount of airing out would ever cause that smell to go away. For one thing, it surely didn't smell of leather to me.

I received three pen cases from Franklin-Christoph and my goodness, what a night and day/world of difference between the two. There was NO odor, the quality is amazing, and they smell of nothing but that of a handmade quality leather item. Not to dis Pelikan (I've read too many good things about them to do that. Further, that's why I made the initial Pelikan purchase; because of all the positive things said of their cases). The Franklin-Christoph cases look and feel very refined/classy. In my opinion, great value for what you get in return. First class item.

I'll likely be ordering another Pelikan case from another vendor before too long. Why, given as I'm so happy with the Franklin-Christoph's one might ask? Well, I reckon it's the stubbornness in me. Don't want to give up on them entirely and would like to receive one of the quality and make that everyone speaks so highly of here on the forums. That said, any vendors/sites you folks recommend for ordering a Pelikan case? I went the Amazon route but won't go there again (where this case is concerned).

Appreciate the input.

I suppose it could have been a bad batch? But when you do get a Pelikan case from another source, I'd suggest you only get the single-pen version & air it out for a good long while before using it. The green banded cases have a little less manufacturing odour.

Best of luck.

I have ordered several Pelikan pen cases over the years and all have been of excellent quality with a genuine leather smell. I have not, however, ordered one in a couple of years. Good luck and let us know how your next purchase goes. Thanks!

  • 2 weeks later...

I have two of these three pen cases and have had and used 'em for almost 20 years now. When I got them all I noticed was a usual leather smell but nothing like you are describing. After using them all these years there is no odor at all of the cases. They are some of the nicest pen cases I have seen and probably get another. Hope the odor goes away for you .

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
