If You Could Only Pick One, Which Iroshizuku Ink Would It Be?

Asa Gao is the go to blue ink. I thought I'd get tired of it, but ended up buying a 2nd bottle after exhausting the 1st!

I actually already made that choice. The first Iro I ever bought was Fuyu-gaki, because I thought the color looked so cool ni pictuers, but it was just a bit too light and meh when I got it, so I was very, very careful about my next choice. I finally decided on Tsuki-yo, and I absolutely love it. That subtle misty blue grey, with a hint of red sheen in the right conditions, work-appropriate, well-behaved--gorgeous.

This is a great question! If I could only pick one Iroshizuku ink, I would never be able to choose, and so I would not own any Iroshizuku ink. Which is why I do not, in fact, own any Iroshizuku ink in bottles, but instead have sample vials of like half of the colors. I really can't justify buying more than one Iroshizuku ink, but I can't choose just one.

Tsuyu-Kusa I think is not talked about because of the other beautiful colors in the Iroshizuku line,

but I find it a very true blue, and shades well. I know it's not as "exciting" as the others but it really

is a nice color.

Hotei-son, perhaps.

I endeavour to be frank and truthful in what I write, show or otherwise present, when I relate my first-hand experiences that are not independently verifiable; and link to third-party content where I can, when I make a claim or refute a statement of fact in a thread. If there is something you can verify for yourself, I entreat you to do so, and judge for yourself what is right, correct, and valid. I may be wrong, and my position or say-so is no more authoritative and carries no more weight than anyone else's here.

Was that one of the special colors that was released for their 100th anniversary, along with the special pens?  I never got a chance to try any of those (there were a couple which looked interesting).

I'm in the same position. Could've bought a couple of bottles of the 100th anniversary inks at reasonable prices locally at the time, but given I have all 24 Iroshizuku colours in the regular line-up but rarely use any of them these days, I don't think I'd actually miss any of them — either the 24 or the 7 — should they be discontinued (or even taken away from me); and so I ultimately passed on the opportunity.

Hotei-son is the green-so-dark-it's-black one out of the seven 100th anniversary colours, and from what I remember reading in reviews has a bit of water resistance. If I could only pick one colour, that's the one that sorta most “suits all occasions”.

Needs to be more love for Take-sumi. IMO, I can find good colors elsewhere, but in terms of "artistic" black inks, Take-sumi is really good.

Hotei-son looks beautiful - I wish I'd got some of the anniversary inks, but at the time, they were just too much to justify.

In the regular line, my most used are kiri-same and the very under appreciated ina-ho. I use shin-kai for a specific pen (that's pretty much always inked). I do reach for the brighter ones when the mood takes me, but it's not feeling spring-like enough here yet!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
