Luckykate, what about getting those handheld vacuum cleaners--more work, but problem solved! I totally hear you. I placed an order then cancelled it because some of the pics look very similar to my M400, and I'm not convinced it is *that* different.

The brown tortoise is my favorite Pelikan finish, but for the time being I plan I to refuse buying this one out of protest, since they really should do an M600 brown tortoise and I have no need of another M400...

If I were looking for a Tortoiseshell 400, I would look for an older vintage from about 1950 up through the late '80s. I prefer the simpler non pocket jewelry look of them and the nibs though plain 14k gold were a delight to write with. Here's mine from 1985:

Just ordered from Niche pens .. came out to about $330 with overseas shipping -- I'm quite happy with that price.

That's about $60 less than I paid from Niche Pens and I am in the UK. The joys of VAT and a poor exchange rate.

I ordered from La Corronne du Compte for 268 Euros minus a 10% coupon, which is 241 Euros or 268 U.S. dollars. They're out of stock at the moment though so there's a wait till the end of the month.

Conib, some bloggers are sponsored by LCdC and have promotional codes on their blogs. Use "BROWN10" for example.

They're arriving in Italy too, this week or the next one.  :)

Very nice pen.
I was told that abroad it comes in its classic box, is it correct? (Here in Italy it will come in a beautiful square box with ink and pencase)

(The ink is the "Brilliant Brown", btw)

Yes mine came in a classic box with pencase. No ink, which I didn't want anyway.

You rock, @Lemony Cricket! Just picked mine up for $271.84 US (€241.74) with the coupon. Thanks for the coupon code share. :)

Why are there fourteen samples of dark plum ink on my desk? Because I still haven't found the right shade.

Is that a problem...???  : : : sigh : : :

Update: Great. Finally found one I love (Lamy Dark Lilac) but I can't get more. Ah, life in my inky world....

I feel like I should start a new thread: Pelikan 400 brown tortoise or new vacuum cleaner (my old one is broken)?

Get a Dyson, you wont regret it :-)

I'm not sure that the 400 series were produced into the 80s. The 400 itself was produced between 1951 and 1954. Merz & Krell versions were the last in line (after 400NN) and they were produced between 1973 and 1978.

I have one from the 80s with nib from a 400 of the 50s.

But a 400 is different from a M400. M400 is the successor to the old 400 line but they are not the same pens. Please check http://www.ruettinge...modell-400.html
