What's Your Favorite Purple Ink?

Diamine Tyrian Purple is my favorite, for its dusty look. It is magnificent with my Swan 230's #2 nib. The hues are very rich and soft.

Scabiosa by R&K, for its old fashioned atmosphere.

Just at the minute, I'm using Diamine Bilberry, Kyo-Iro Soft snows of Ohara, and Noodlers Kung Te-Cheng. I've been trying to decide which one I prefer, but I like all of them.

Now I call that a great comparison, Lgsoltek. Thanks!

I was into purple at some point in the past but I've lost interest in purple now.

Diamine Majestic Purple was my go-to purple back then.

I also got plenty of blurples and used them consistently as well. But there too, my love affair with that color category just fizzled out.

Pelikan Edelstein Sapphire.

Sailor Jentle UltraMarine (now renamed to Nioi-Sumire)

And a few other blurples were in regular rotation for me.

Would you be willing to post a photograph of those inks side by side, for comparison? Soft Snows of Ohara is my favorite ink, but I haven't used either of the others.

Levenger Amethyst remains my favorite purple and my signature ink color. Nothing else compares.

Please have a look at Iroshizuku Yama Budo. It is a very smooth ink with a wonderful color that I am becoming addicted to. You can usually find it on Amazon or eBay for about US$20/bottle. It's wonderful!

I second this! Yama-Budo is one of my favorites but it might not be exactly what you're looking for. It's more of a burgandy

Did you check out the purple thread? Check out the link in my signature. If you find a color you like let us suggest some other similar inks.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

I use purple frequently. I tend to like either very dark purples or dusty purples, so keep that in mind when I recommend:

Diamine Eclipse (very dark)

Diamine Damson (lighter, dustier)

Diamine Deep Dark Purple (I like this very much but it does trend to a reddish color)

Rohrer and Klingner Scabiosa (dustier and really interesting, very dry, iron gall)

J. Herbin Poussiere de Lune (dusty but approaching a a sort of maroon)

These are the purples I keep coming back to. I tried the Private Reserve Ebony Purple but it just has too much green sheen. If I wanted green I would have gotten a green ink. I know some people love it for that very reason but I found it irritating.

Lamy Dark Lilac (and my R&K Solferino has concentrated in the nib a little and is more purple than magenta at the moment).

I am basically hoarding one sample of Iroshizuku Murasaki Shibikubu for just this reason. It's my perfect purple, but I am not allowing myself any non-work ink purchases for a month or two. If I get it the ink will be paid for with leftover quarters from turnpike tolls.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
