I Succumbed

I tried an Esterbrook once before and thought it wasn't for me. In retrospect, I think it was the nib, not the pen, and I should have stuck it out, especially since the nips are swappable!

But then my weakness for red pens felled me and I bought an SJ in red from a lovely seller on FPN. And I love it. It's such a sturdy, friendly pen. I like lever fillers and it's a lever filler. The 2668 nib writes smoothly and reliably. And it's great paired with Montblanc Corn Poppy Red.

This is evil, because now that I have been bitten by the bug, I want more SJs in more colors.

I console myself by telling myself that getting bitten by the Esterbrook bug is liable to be less expensive than, say, my love for Nakayas. :P

I fail to see a problem here, unless your garage is already full of other pens.

I agree! There is no problem here. You have finally found the joy of using a quality fountain pen. Too many people equate quality with cost. If you find the 2668 nib pleasing, try a 9668 nib. You haven't been "bitten", you have discovered. Congratulations!

Now, my favorite is the Esterbrook J with a 9550 nib. You have found your favorite to be the Esterbrook SJ. Now explore the nibs and live life in a pleasure that those who have not tried the Esterbrooks cannot fathom. Had the Mona Lisa lived when Esterbrook fountain pens were in production, I could easily explain her mysterious smile.

I was glad to encounter a fellow member, who liked Parker 51 fountain pens. He also wrote highly of Esterbrooks, so I tried one, then two, then . . . . . .

Twenty Esterbrooks later, I am nearly content. I wish you luck, but I fear it is already too late.

It's easy to get carried away with these. I liked the nibs. Having a variety of nibs and few Esterbrook pens to put them in, I bought enough pens to deploy the nibs without having to change nibs all the time.

I'm keeping my eyes out for an SJ in blue and one in green in particular--pretty colors! But there's no hurry. I enjoy poring over the Classifieds section. :)

And I just got a nice deep red Dollar H at the flea market today. That will be getting high priority for listing on my Etsy page.

It's REALLY nice looking.... B) B) B) B) B) B)

  • 3 months later...

I put Corn Poppy Red (sample) in my red SJ too. (Edit here) and mine has the same nib 2668.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
