Dr J Needs help again- De Atramentis Pearlescent Inks

When I spent a few year in Germany last year I visited Dr J at his home in Hachenburg. Actually it was the first time we personally met....

So on inks we had a Little chit-chat

On Pearlescent inks

Me: Do I like those? Er... I don't know

Dr J: Is it smart to use such in Fountain Pens? Er.. I don't know

Well I have such Inks in my Calligraphy line so...

What the Heck let's test and give it a GO!

De Atramentis Sheeny Happy Inks Are Calling

http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a617/Morbus_Curiositas/DE%20Atra%20Perlglanz/ALL%20bottle%20fuse_zpshwojnv3g.jpg

There were a few concerns about using inks that contain metal parts in Fountain Pens

  • Is there a market fr those inks? I showed Dr J the Examples of Diamine .. Well there is one
  • Are they suitable for Use in Fountain Pens

Again off Course I pointed Dr J on the above mentioned Ink Brands. I told them that is of utmost important though to regularly clean and Service the pen....

Dr J answered takeing care of and cleaning the Foutain Pen is essential for all Fountain Pens no matter what Ink but...

I still want to perform some test with my inks before sending them to you

I the Calligraphy line https://www.google.nl/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=2&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwjeutCh4pvOAhWJJsAKHX7CAYYQFggjMAE&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.kalligrafie-laden.de%2Findex.php%3Flanguage%3Den&usg=AFQjCNE48m4W7nPeVxveIjne_UVnfmUhrA

De Atramentis carries a lot of specialty inks like IG inks but als inks based on ancient recipes. Also De Atramentis carries ink for dip pens containing Silver, Gold, Copper and Brass particles

Using pearlescent inks in the Fountain Pens

Dr J tested the inks in a fountain pen and had no trouble what so ever. I tested the inks in 2 Fountain Pens leaving one on my desk for 2 weeks and one for 2 months...

No Problem after shaking the pens they wrote fluenty... Then again we love t hear your experience on that but beware

Fountain Pens need regular maintenance in general. When using pearlescent inks (of any brand) regulary cleaning and riincing your pen is ESSENTIAL!!!

That said let's go :)

De Atramentis Perlglanztinten / Atramentis Perlescent inks

The Advantage of a small Company is flexibility. It is easy to meet customers wishes as well.

To start Dr J introduced 40 inks for testing purposes

40 sounds like a lot and it is a lot :)

10 Colours each colour available with SILVER, GOLD, COPPER or BRASS nano particles

Dr J assured me it is possible to make pearlescent of all of his Standard inks (76 colours) if there is a request for that

  • According the metal nano-particles were available in 3 sizes Dr J Chose the middle as he though the smallest had little effect and the larger ones might clog nibs
  • As you will see in the photo's and scans the different metal particles can greatly influence the hue and colour appearance of the inks, although the basic colour was the same
  • As ssually Dr J is open for your comments, suggestions and wishes... That is why he: Needs YOU again

I used 2 sort of paper For the ink vomits I used 160 grams paper but it did nt give as good result as the Walzmühle Reflex paper I used for the Hand written samples

Bernstein Gelb / Amber Yellow

The yellow is, because of the metall particles, well legible, especially for a gelb ink. The hue varies from brilliant yellow (silver) to more orange/brown hues (copper, brass)

Brilliant Violett / Brilliant Violet

M.I.A.???

Yes when I was working with these inks I accidentily dropped a bottle :yikes: fortunately it was outside and not a document ink so the Brilliant Violet Silver ink is now Resting in er... Pieces and Missing in Action

Oh yes! :D

The complication is that *technically* I'm on vacation: technically being the operative word. I keep having to bounce back and forth between the campground and the house, because I have some commitments for stuff I have to make that I can't do up there, and when I'm *there* I don't have easy access to email (or FPN) and also have a lot of other commitments (Sunday evening I think I'm currently -- at last count, anyway -- quadruple booked, including going to a memorial service for the person whose Cross Solo I now own) that tend to be to make things somewhat better for *other* people. Although this morning, before coming back to the house, I did get to take a class....

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
