Melbourne Pen Depot (Chadstone Vic) Closing :(

I bear bad news ppls :(

Melbourne Pen Depot, that writing instrument stalwart that's been at Chadstone Shopping Centre for over three decades, will be shutting (B&M) store this Saturday.

MPD has been at Chadstone longer than I can remember; they used to have a giant 8 foot tall MontBlanc (or similar big fat pen, can't remember if it bore any branding) which I loved visiting.

I will definitely miss my occasional opportunity to go perve at shiny MontBlancs & Cartiers whilst scheming how to get last ink acquisitions past the scrutiny of la Ministress of Household (usually there'll be enough shopping bags to hide a few little boxes within). I'll have to find somewhere else to kill time whilst waiting for the lady shoppers... lord knows where, hanging around AppleStore or the Tesla showstand could prove ruinously expensive.

Anybuddy who's familiar with Geoff & Debbie at MPD, do suggest you pop in THIS WEEK at Chaddy to reminisce. Might find something you like too, they're doing 15% Off on all the pens I peeked at.

Going forwards they advise they'll be keeping their online store going.

Oh that's a real shame, I was a regular actual and window shopper there. My husband bought his first fountain pen there, starting his appreciation of fine pens.

It is a shame. I was a regular window shopper and sometimes ink shopper when I was in Melbourne. Having said that, I am not surprised given how expensive it is run any kind of business in Oz.

Final day, ppls!

Yeah Chaddy is undergoing expansion/renovations/lets-make-tenants-play-musical-chairs... 200 shops getting moved around just for the sake of getting moved around. IMHO routine real waste of resources but hey, keeps them shopfitoutters gainfully employed, huh?

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
