Loose Feed From Repeated Pulling

Hello,

I have a Pilot Prera here, and have repeatedly pulled the nib/feed out such that it's no longer snug. At times it may just drop out while filling the pen. Is there any safe solution for this? Thank you!

If the section itself isn't too worn out, you could try replacing the feed. IIRC Pilot don't sell nibs/feeds separately, but you could buy a less expensive 78G or an even less expensive Wingsung 659 and try cannibalise its feed.

I hate to be 'Captain Hindsight' but other than that there's not a great deal you can do, and it will undoubtedly keep happening until you stop pulling the nib.

The nib and feed are a friction fit in the section, and just aren't designed to be repeatedly pulled. I see this kind of question getting asked more and more, no doubt due to the malign influence of reddit (some of the advice I read on reddit is just scarily clueless) and youtube.

There's a long sticky in the Parker thread about what to do after buying your first 51. I wish there was something similar about buying your first fountain pen period! There should be nothing routine about disassembly.

Why did the feed repeatedly get removed?

I had been trying to fix the nib previous. Haven't done so for my other Pilot pens just so you know. Hmmm. I have other feeds so I will probably do just that. Thanks!

No I have been trying to fix it for months. Everytime I thought i fixed it, went to school and it wrote weird and awful again, and then I'm back at it again trying to fix it. After a while, I accepted it was a dud. And replaced it.

Sorry to hear that - in that case, definitely look at the demonstrator wing sung 659. The package comes with both F and EF nibs in unplated steel, and the nibs & feeds should fit your Prera - I got lucky, both the EF and F had very well ground tipping!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
