Howya From Galway, Ireland

Howya! Hope you are all well.

My name is John and I'm 43 years old. Originally from Belfast in Northern Ireland I have been living down in the south of Ireland in Galway for nearly 20 years. I've been stalking this forum for long enough now, picking your collective brains and reading reviews. It's about time I joined!

I am a noobie to the world of fountain pens. Well maybe not a true noobie as I remember using them in primary school. Perhaps it would be more accurate to say that I'm a noobie to the world of fascination with fountain pens! A couple of years ago I returned to education and thought, for old times sake, I'd like to use a fountain pen for my note taking. And so was born a wee bit of an obsession that I can't really explain to 'normal' people but I'd say is very much understood here with you guys!

My collection, so far, is rather eclectic. Among the cheap, and sometimes cheerful, Chinese made pens I have a Lamy 2000, a Visconti Van Gogh Maxi and an Italix Parson's Essential. In the last week I have plunged into the vintage era with a Montblanc 24 and a striped Parker vacumatic. No clear theme to my collection emerging yet as you can tell!

Thanks for listening,

John.

Hi John, I am also formally from Belfast but left those shores back in 1970 for a "new" life here in Sydney, Australia...I have used fountain pens all my life since the introduction to dip pens in primary school back in the 50's. You will enjoy your time here, everyone is so friendly and knowledgeable...

Hi John; welcome to these pages of wisdom,I myself am an advocate for Chinese Pens and can put you right in the

picture by advising that you should concentrate on purchasing some Jinhao or Baoer F pens as they are by far the most collected pens on these pages, I always have at least 30 or more of them and I use them to reward people

for doing good work at my place, I have never had one returned yet in fact most recipients have the gall to ask for another for the wife.Your mention of Galway brings back fond memories of the Rose Contest of 1974, I now live in Adelaide Australia and boast of having an Irish Father, his name was oneill, my oldest redheaded daughter

Angela was the Adelaide Rose in 1974 we have relatives in Carna and as you can tell are very proud of our Irish

Heritage, we even got to meet The Dubliners. If I can be of any assistance please don't hesitate to contact me at 86 years old having kissed the Blarney Stone I can tell you lots about Pens or anything else for that matter.

regards oneill

Really nice to read your post. It is always nice to hear from people from my old home town. I still make it home at least once a year. Even in the 20 years I've lived away the place has changed immensely. My brother got married last year and had his reception in the Titanic Quarter, Harland and Wolfe to you and I. I hadn't been into the city centre in many years. I couldn't believe how it had transformed! It really has become a metropolitan city. Great to see.

I wish you well my friend, John.

Thanks a million for your post, or as they say here in Galway 'Go raibh mile maith agat'. And that my friend is about the extent of my Gaelic unfortunately! I read your post to my wife, who is a native of these parts, and she thought it was lovely. She's from the city of Galway or a 'Townie' as you would say here. Though she went to school in Spiddal which, like Carna, is in whats known as The Gaeltacht (an Irish speaking area). She says Hi!

Thanks for the advice on the Chinese pens. I have a couple of the x450 and x750. I think the x750 is a cracking pen.

Thanks again for your post. And as they say in Galway 'Slán Go Fóill Mo Chara'. (My wife assisted in the spelling of that one!)

John.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
