Biggest Nib (Not Tip) Available In A Pen & As A Spare

Hello,

I am starting this topic to start a discussion on the biggest nib available in a Pen and as a spare for replacement.

As we all know, the most commonly available big size nib is the #6 available from Jowo, Bock and others. Fountain Pen Revolution sells a #8 Nib which I have found to be the biggest spare nib available - www.fountainpenrevolution.com/nibs.html

A Jowo #8 Gold Nib is available on www.fpnibs.com.

However, it is very difficult to find a nib size bigger than No.8. The Mont Blanc uses a No.9 in the 149 which is said to be a proprietary nib.

There is a discussion on the different nib sizes on http://www.nibs.com/nibvalues.html where sizes upto #18 are mentioned. However, these sizes may also be proprietary, for example the William S. Hicks or the Waterman' s 100 Years.

I request experts to shed some light on the biggest spare nib available and pens that have the biggest size nib (even if it is proprietary).

Thank you

I think the #6 is the biggest nib that is easily available from retailers nowadays. Yes, older pen models had bigger nibs, but, these nibs are not manufactured and finding them is kinda hard. If you attend pen shows and ask around, you might find of of the bigger nibs, but be prepared to pay a very high price.

Thank you for your response. As i said in my post, FPN sells #8 Nibs. There is a site which claimed to sell #12 Jowo but is down presently.

So, it would be interesting to know if there is supplier providing nibs larger than #8.

Also, are there any pens having nibs bigger than the MB 149, Pelikan Flagship, Sailor KOP and Namiki Emperor to name a few.

Thank you

Hello,

It cannot be compared with MB, Namiki, or other gold nibs . But Ambitious has a very big nib ( #8 ) 40mm long , 10 mm large steel gold plated and has excellent perfomance if you like juicy M nibs with little flex.

Yes, you can buy them from Mr. Subramanian (from ASA Pens ) , also known here as SubbuASA , send him an PM. You can also ask member Mehandiratta if he has some n#8 left from recent group buy :)

The largest regular production Parker nib would be a #12.

The largest regular production Waterman nib would be a #10. A close second would be a Patrician nib and a #8.

MB also made a #12 nib that would rival the two mentioned above.

I'm always looking for extras though they don't fit most pens....

Thank you for your response. Can you please let me know which models of Parker, Waterman and Mont Blanc in regular production have the #12, #10 and #12 respectively ?

If you needed just one or two, custom made are the best.

Thank you for the response. Can you suggest a manufacturer who can provide custom nibs? Thank you

None are in current production.

Look for Parker Giant; Waterman 20; I do not know the MB model number.

  • 2 months later...

I bought a Delta Federico Oversize and I was expecting a # 8 nib. When it arrived, for my surprise the nib is bigger than the one on my mb149 # 9 nib.

Perhaps you could try to order from Delta a similar or bigger nib, knowing for a fact that they manufacture oversize nibs.

You won't find a Watermans 10. The #8 is rare and expensive. These are for big fans of, and collectors of Waterman (or any of the others you mentioned) not a casual buyer.

I think you should seperate the vintage nibs mentioned from the modern giants. They are in two different worlds. The only ones that I know are the old Watermans, like 100 years old. Even as a collector of Waterman I did not think of finding a #8 nib until I had some experience and knew that for me collecting Waterman was not a passing whim. The #10 nib would be in a giant display type of pen, not a user.

Many large nibs are Bock, specifically the 380 size. They don't sell to individuals but to other manufacturers like thr Delta mentioned above. I think Conid is Belgium will sell a single large Bock nib in Ti or gold. Note that Bock will vary the characteristics of the nibs per manufacturer request so a Delta and a Danitro #8 nib will not write the same even though Bock made both.

Beaufort ink in UK is likely also able to source Bock 380's although they are not listed on Beaufort's website. According to their blog, they sold at least one earlier this year.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
