My Seven Empty And Clean Ink Bottles!

Put a message (and maybe a $1 note) in each bottle and throw them in the sea. Might float, wash ashore somewhere and brighten up someone's life.

I would recommend you to put some Spices with label on cap...

For the more adventurous, put spices in the bottles with NO labels.

Folks: apologies for asking a side question here - didn't want to start a new thread, and thinking about empty ink bottles set me wondering: How do you get the last of your ink from the bottle and into the pen? Once the ink is down to the last few mm in depth, it's a bit hard to get pens with converters (and even harder with piston fillers) suck up the ink. One could remove and use the converter by itself of course (that's what I do now) or pour the last of the ink into a taller, skinnier container, or sit the bottle tilted in a holder of sorts, or even just pour the last of the ink into a new full bottle and get rid of the problem entirely. Anyone with more elegant / creative ideas?

I just took the last 15 ml of Pelikan 4001 Blue Black out of the bottle via syringe. It was getting difficult to fill from that bottle. The new bottle didn't have enough room for the old ink in the top. So I put it in a couple of 10 ml vials I had. Will be easy to fill from too.

Cleaned up the bottle best I could then ran it through the dishwasher...

Thanks Runnin_Ute. I think we should get back to the original topic of this thread here. I'm to blame for asking a side question and my heartfelt apologies to the original poster Charles Skinner.

I guess I missed how big the bottles are. Their size/volume is going to dictate what you're able to put in it, and in what amounts.

Just don't put fish in them for any time longer than it takes to take a few photos.... Short photo ops, yes. Full time housing? Nope.

Let us go back to my question! What can I do that is interesting with my clean, empty ink bottles? C. S.

Make your own aftershave and use a pretty ink bottle such as a Pelikan Edelstein, Pilot Iroshikou etc for it?

I have any number of empty ink bottles. I use them for the larger ink mixes I do. Most ink mixes are experimental, and therefore in small bottles. But sometimes I figure that the mixture is stable, and good. So I mix up a larger batch. That's when having an empty ink bottle around comes in handy.

Yeah, not as amusing as some of the other suggestions, but that's what I do with them, anyway.

On a sacred quest for the perfect blue ink mixture!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
