New Cross Inks

I had an email today from Cross offering free ink with any new purchase. The colours offered for bottled ink included purple, red, green and blue-black, in a smart new look bottle, priced at £14 - much more pricey than the usual Cross ink. Is this new? I cannot find any reference to it in the forum (here or inks) but perhaps I haven't looked hard enough! It looks a bit as though it might be a Pelikan Edelstein copy, perhaps.

Been around for a little while. The purple is nice.

Edit to add: sold by Cultpens in the UK, and a few other stockists.

I bought a bottle of the purple, which I really like. It is something of a bear to clean out of a pen.

I just looked at the Cross website. I haven't seen these on there before other than black, blue, and blue/black. Different bottle labels on all of them too. Are these also made by Pelikan, i.e. 4001 series (Cross green = Pelikan 4001 Vibrant Green, etc)? $15 on their web page.

If they are still Pelikan 4001 series, I'll be disappointed in some of the colors, namely red. Brilliant red is a horid orange.

I am more interested in their archival quality claim and mostly looking at the blue one, but can't even find a swab to compare...

I think ANDERSON PENS have the Toucan ink; I got a bottle awhile back (not red, but surely they have one.)

I actually bought a bottle of new Cross Blue-Black in Fountain Pen Hospital last week.

I am using in Platinum Preppy/Plaisir now...

I was thinking of making a mini review of it, but not sure there is a point to it - ink is average, color swab on Anderson Pens is close to actual color.

I want to put several inks up for lightfastness test, but don't have much time...

I was also hoping they have at least some water resistance, but that's not really the case - they behave better than Waterman Serverity and may still be readable to some extent, but expect that most ink will wash out.

Hi Nosmoking! For a true red, try Shaeffer Skrip Red. It's the truest red I've found.

I've reviewed blue black if someone is interested.

Thank you. I bought a bottle of it almost a month ago, but since I am not an ink reviewer, I couldn't write much about it :)

But I like the ink so far - it behaves well in several different pens I tried it - Platinum Preppy, Jinhao 126, Hero Freecode...

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
