Taipei, Kobe And Osaka Trip Acquisitions

Paid a visit to Taipei's TY Lee and Pen Studio recently, followed up by a hop over to Kobe Nagasawa, and Osaka's Morita pen store. I also managed to meet up with the very kind mchenart (he with the awesome Hakase pen report) and a number of other lovely Taiwan pen enthusiasts in Taipei and admire a large number of beautiful collections.

So I picked up some inks -

  • Bungbox (88 and Valentine's Chocolate Brown) and Oriental ink were gifts,
  • Taiwanese handmade ink "Ancient Forest" by Inkwall and Platinum Black were purchased in Taipei,
  • and the other Sailor inks (1 Morita Wine Red, 6 Kobe inks) from Japan

Also picked up some pens -

  • Morita Pro Gear 21K F
  • Nagasawa Skeleton Black Profit, Music nib
  • Nagasawa #43 "Gakuen-toshi Fresh Green" ink Pro Gear Sapporo/Slim, 14K F
  • Nagasawa #25 Tarumi Apricot ink Pro Gear Sapooro/Slim, 14K EF
  • and a Nagasawa Port Blue Pro-color in the background. Steel EF

Cap band detail - also visible are the slightly shimmery bodies on the green, orange and blue bodies.

Cap end detail - Nagasawa pens have Sailor ink jars on the finials instead of anchors

Nagasawa Skeleton Black Proske Nib - The company uses the cockrel weathervane from local historical buildling as its logo.

Body profile - the lines at the back end of the pen actually depict what I believe to be the Kobe city skyline.

Campus green nib - I love how they use the old Sailor nib border design

Every converter is colour-matched. I don't think I've seen the shiny black converter in many places. Perhaps the black lustre pens have them as well.

Didn't forget the Platinum President from TY Lee (such a friendly man!)

And how my pen wrap looked for all of a few days before I passed on the campus green Pro Gear Sapporo to a friend who had requested it.

There are a few extra shots in the full album here. Thanks for looking!

Thank you for letting me get one.

Great haul!

On behalf of all of us in Japan, thank you for supporting our economy.

No problem, back to saving up for next March!

Those hedgehog and owl lettersets are so cute! How well do they take writing with FPs?

I saw them on sale in a Nagasawa store, so I'm fairly confident about their performance. I actually bought a few different types of paper there, so I might make a post about it later!

It's a very stubby stub. You can see it in the first entry of the writing sample. Very smooth, not crisp italic at all, but has noticeable line variation. The Pilot 78G B stub has more line variation, but is untipped.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
