A great turn-out is expected!

I would much rather go to the pen round up (or the Portland Highland games the same day) than the Christine Palmer Antique Show.

Probably because I was once kicked out for asking how my wife was supposed to know that photography was prohibited when no signs or announcements stating that existed. Note that my wife wasn't kicked out for taking a photograph, I was kicked out for asking how we were expected to know about this alleged rule.

No need to choose, Zwack!

It was such an exciting event that they had the Good Year Zeppelin circling overhead (although I don't know which one, Spirit of Innovation was supposed to be in Arcata California and Spirit of America is based in California)

I would love to have joined the group at the Lucky Labradore but since we have several friends who travel and stay with us for the Antique show, that is the social highlight of our summer. As long as the two are on the same weekend I'm going to keep missing out.

So how was it? Any reports been posted anywhere?

The social highlight of the summer should not be given short shrift! It might be interesting next year to take your friends by the Lucky Lab for a pilsner and a peek at the pens. Just as a part of having fully partaken of the Portland panorama.

The crowd looked pretty good when i was there with buyer/seller interchange. Whether this resulted in actual $$$ being interchanged, I don't know. I was interested in a Pelikan 600 old style but didn't buy. I probably missed a good deal.

I have two observations that are strictly personal.

1 I use a walker or a cane and get beat out pretty quickly. A pen show with aisles of vendors is probably not for me. I can't figure out how to use the classified on FPN to get to brand quickly, so most of my buying is on the bay or dealers. It is probably a good thing that I look for vintage user-levels of type or ephemera. When I buy new stuff, it is usually through a dealer.

2 Again, this is strictly personal. I look at table after table, row after row of pens, and it all becomes a blur. I become very disinterested visually. Yet this must be how the true collectors pick through for that rare prize. I know "who knows what anyone else is looking for or has an interest in" ... put it all out. Yet I wonder if dealers have some idea of what they have that is of more interest, maybe 4-5 pens as a display. and a list of similar displays if someone wanted to see a specific. I'm not talking about selling under glass, but maybe a step up from the full table, with more visual interest.

Again, this may just be me personally because of physical limitations and too many years of attending art galleries.

My wife commented in the other thread about her opinion. Given my opinion of the antique show (see above) I would say that the time taken to visit the pen round up would be a good way to spend some of the time (the antique show goes on for longer too so you can always go there before, afterwards and or the following day if you have to go).

  • 2 weeks later...

I had a great time there! Although I was on a strict no-buy visit that lasted about 15 minutes in. I found a gorgeous Waterman hard rubber flex pen, a Wahl Skyline (flexy!!) pen and pencil set in the box with tags, and an awesome Sheaffer that can write from either side, and a beautiful Parker FP and Pencil set in the box.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
